I can't afford to subsidize service workers while corporations profit from paying them lower wages, I just wish Marriot maids and waitresses would stop spitting in my food and not folding my blankets, and blame their bosses when I don't tip.

So then go be a waitress instead of a hotel maid.

I've had a few exceptional hotel maids and I did tip them, but this push is now going to have them all EXPECTING to be tipped.

Well, not really. I spend a great deal of time traveling. My job has me staying from 7 to 9 days in each location. Depending on availability and remoteness of locations my lodging runs the gamut, from mom and pops, to Patel low range, to Candlewood Suites to Marriott's.

It is my experience that housekeeping staff work the same floors and rooms. I see the same house keeper for the entire stay, excepting his or her days off. It is also my experience that tipping is common with most guests and especially the seasoned traveler, that's why housekeepers prefer to work the same floor, zone or set of rooms. They are rewarded for good service and the relationship builds when the same face is seen from day to day. It's just good business.

Most all mom and pop motels leave envelopes on the table, highway motels not so much, downtown and higher end motels and hotels will most definitely have an envelope visible. Where envelopes are seen they are signed by your housekeeper.

    Cheers

Would same apply if a Restaurant asked patrons to fairly tip their wait staff? Perhaps some people don't understand that Maids rely on tips to subsidize their wages. A cure for this problem, require all service employees receive minimum wage. Wait staff should receive minimum wage. So if their salary and tips doesn't equal minimum wage the establishment must make up the difference. That is fair and that is just.

Plus you tip bellmen and valets don't you, why not your maid?

I say pay them a living wage and if they are lucky enough to get the rare tip, bonus

    ......

Marriott thought they would get away with the tightwad owners' plan to make their guests pay more of Marriott's bills while they can then not pay even the minimum wage they now must pay. The maids have to declare their tips which will relieve Marriott from paying them minimum wage.

It is a stingy way for corporations to beat even paying maids the minimum wage. Can you imagine with Mitt Romney, owner of Marriott Enterprises, as president, what he would do to minimum wages in our services industries? He would have been 100% for corporations and 0% for the worker.

The tightwads are the corporations, not the customers...but of course you already now that, and you are feeling kinda defensive right now.

I think the people for this are too cheap to tip their maids and want a cheaper nightly room rate

From the article, "maids are paid above the federal minimum wage". You just make up the (*)(*)(*)(*) as you go along.

Stayed at the Marriott in Plano Tx Friday night. $185 per night. I think you could find something in the $183 range or less and give your maid a couple bucks.

No.... the tightwads are customers who don't tip service workers.

Marriott does theit part by giving them a job.
