'On Wednesday, Maryam Mirzakhani became the first woman in 78 years to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal, considered the highest honor in mathematics. She was selected for "stunning advances in the theory of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces."'

    ...

'Mirzakhani, who grew up in Iran before earning her Ph.D. at Harvard and becoming a professor at Stanford, told the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2008 that she did not initially realize her strength in math: "I don't think that everyone should become a mathematician, but I do believe that many students don't give mathematics a real chance. I did poorly in math for a couple of years in middle school; I was just not interested in thinking about it. I can see that without being excited mathematics can look pointless and cold."'

Nice to see this accomplishment. I'm sure the alt-right will be furious that an Iranian immigrant woman won this award, but it just proves that they can do it too.

Actually that would be Muslims who see women as inferior. I find it amusing you attack conservatives for hating women when there are no rules that stop women from driving, working or being able to say they were raped without 4 men witnessing it in this country where the "alt right" lives.

Might want to brush up on reality.

Hopefully she won not because she was a woman and an iran immigrant, and also not because its the current year. Hopefully...

Well I suppose that's how it has to start right? A woman has to win the first time, and people have to wonder if it was really her own merit. Then another woman has to win and another, until people stop making accusations.

    Mathematicians are exceptional cheaters.

It doesn't have to start with a political agenda, it has to start with merit. Thanks to the left it leaves one wondering if when someone the left deems as oppressed gets an award is it due to merit or an agenda.

This is easily explained. Women have a much lower standard deviation on the IQ normal curve putting far fewer of them in the right and left hand tails.

    Fewer morons. Fewer super-geniuses.

Not at all and quite to the contrary it demonstrates how Islam holds women back from their true potential and it was only when this woman
came to the west that she was allowed and encouraged to excel which proves the value of freedom over repressive Muslim theocracy.

So you suspect that she won based on politics because democrats support women?

I completely agree. We should rid ourselves of all religion. They only hold us back.

Out of curiosity, where are you getting this data?

    - - - Updated - - -

Are you accusing her of cheating?

She could have cheated. It's a possibility. Mathematicians are fantastic cheaters. We'll wait for the facts to come out before judging

Nobel has no credibility after the whole Obama Peace Prize. They are just another leftist agenda driven group...

    Here is one place:

This is no doubt yet another morally corrupt fact.

    Congratulations to Ms Mirzakhani, btw.

You should probably stop following Mother Jones. Maryam Mirzakhani won this Fields Medal in 2014. It's hardly current news, although MJ is just putting out a story about it.

There is no Nobel for Mathematics. She won the Fields medal, which they nicknamed the "Nobel prize of Mathematics".

Fair enough, doesn't change the fact Nobel still has no credibility...

Very well said. There is no way to tell, especially when the ideological agenda is seen as far more precious than the merits ever could be.

To be fair, even Obama joked about how ridiculous it was that he won. To paraphrase the great DonGlock26, the European council members that decide the Nobel winners were like giggling schoolgirls who couldn't wait to give their Valentines Day cards to their crush.

It's truly embarrassing to watch some of these white leftists trying to gain the love of minorities.

"In 2014, Maryam Mirzakhani became the first woman as well as the first Iranian, Artur Avila the first South American and Manjul Bhargava the first person of Indian origins to win the Fields Medal."

Hey look, all firsts... But Mother Jones pulled up a 2 year old story just to run an article about the first Iranian woman to win... Nevermind the Indian or South American. Those were dudes.

So true. It must suck knowing you're only being chosen because you cried so much about not be chosen. Seriously, where is the honor in that? I don't know how anyone could hold that trophy up proudly.

I guess what you're saying is that if this woman can climb into the 21st century then why can't the rest of them?
