    https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/01/27/us/tyre-nichols-memphis

The city of Memphis released video late Friday that shows several police officers kicking and punching Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who later died, and beating him with a baton at one point while he shows no signs of resisting or fighting back. When Nichols stands up a few seconds later, one officer strikes him with at least five strong blows, while another officer holds his hands behind his back.

At one point, Tyre Nichols is shown on the ground with officers around him, and he can be heard repeatedly screaming: “Mom, Mom, Mom.” Lawyers have said that his mother’s home was about 100 yards away from where he was beaten.

    Videos can be seen here:
    Warning Graphic

Video looks extremely disturbing in parts, almost like a gang beating. Police just happened to be driving a vehicle not equipped with a camera to show the reason he was pulled over so even that is no longer credible. While he did attempt to flee they were extremely aggressive from the first interaction seem on video.

Thankfully charges have been filed against the officers, does anyone here defend this?

He never had a chance to comply, and there is no arguing that the police had a reason to feel he was a threat.

Trying to run away was his only option.

The police officers that were there, had no authority doing what they did and they were wrong and they should know it. I thought the motto was "To protect and to serve" Where did things go wrong? Since when is it OK for Police club an innocent man at will. What would be the meaning of this?

The courts have actually ruled the police have no duty to do either of those. It’s more of a slogan than it is a motto.

There are just way too many American cops who think they can just beat a man to death.
And there are way too many American cops who just let those thugs be in their mids and don't do a thing about it.

See something say something, is only applied when you're a Muslim terrorist.
Crooked cops, far right wing nazi's... it's all cool to let them be.

I saw the video and it was brutal. It was also a microcosm of what Memphis has become.

The cops need to be punished, and at the same time Memphis needs an enema.

I am glad we are starting to see the victims of bad police get justice more often nowadays, about time

It's not enough. Cop culture is all about protecting every rotten apple's back no matter what. You can't trust any cop because of this.
One of them can be a psycho, and snap over nothing... and you end up getting killed and the other cops JOIN IN.
We see this again and again. This lawless gang mentality by cops who back up their fellow cops no matter how psychotic it gets.
They don't go for some kind of respect. They are going for a reign by terror.

This is really on all of them. Because all of them always react like that.

yes, but it's good to see some victims of cops getting justice, we are not 100% there for sure

when good cops start "stopping" bad cops in the act, that is when we know things are really changing - good cops need to treat bad cops like the criminals they are when they witness this stuff

Yeah there is absolutely no explaining their way out of this one. Even if this guy was on the FBI most wanted list nothing justifies the police response in this case. Not in a 1st world country like America of all places.

I will say though as cynical as it sounds I'm pleased that the normal crowds are actually protesting at the moment because of this. I don't wish for the violence that I know will come from these protests that will undoubtedly turn into riots but I'm just happy to see some consistency for a change. I've had about enough of society turning a blind eye and/or excusing black on black violence every single day while simultaneously losing their ever loving minds over white on black violence. Even though the latter happens way less than the former by an enormous order of magnitude and that is an objective fact. When I saw that this was 5 black cops who did this to a black man I figured the traditional riot squads would keep relatively silent having a hard time justifying to themselves to go out and run amok like they do when white cops do this. But they're out there, sort of...so it's a start.

I'm already seeing online videos of "protesters" looting local innocent businesses because somehow that makes sense but that's the standard stupid protocol for this sort of stuff. And then when no business wishes to return to these communities in the future that will be blamed on something other than nights like tonight because logic and reason no longer apply in this modern society we've created.

But alas, maestro play the music. I don't live in nor will I ever live in a city so enjoy the chaos. At least ya'll are rioting against black people killing black people for once so good on you. Plus some semi-famous clown on twitter recently tried to pull the race card and say this incident is the result of white supremacy and virtually everybody on all sides roasted that moron to the tune of thousands of replies. So good on ya'll for that too.

The more cameras the more we will see things they wanted to stay hidden. I hope the protests don’t turn into mass looting as they devalues what is going on here but some people will always use an opportunity to steal.

I am glad these officers were immediately charged — I hope they get the book thrown at them.

That much of your post, I would give a "like," but then your post goes off into a stereotyping of black communities. To that other part, I have two comments. First, any time you have a large number of protesters, of any color, in a good-sized city, there are going to be a few law breakers who are going to try to take advantage of that, for criminal acts. This does not even prove that those individuals have anything to do, with the rest of the protesters, much less that they are indicative, of the group.

Secondly, are you willing to eat your words, predicting the "undoubted...riots," if they do not occur? What fosters such civil unrest, is the impression by the community, that wrongdoing is being swept under the rug. In this instance, unlike most, the response has been both swift, and demonstrative of authorities taking it, with the appropriate seriousness. As such, it would seem that the potential for large scale rioting, has been significantly reduced.

So, if there is no legitimate "rioting," will you concede that what I just stated, may be a reasonable explanation as to why we do often see civil disobedience? That is, that it is provoked by suspect officials, not being decisive, transparent or forthcoming, and thereby evoking images of the many past instances of such crimes, which have just been buried, by the powers that be?

In the interest of my own argument's transparency, here is the rest of your post:

Firstly there is no stereotyping going on here. The "black community" in the inner cities of America is everything the so called stereotypes think it is and we are doing ourselves no service by consistently pretending that it's not. I grew up there, I know full well what these places are actually like.

Secondly, I will absolutely support non-violent protests AND non "looting" protests. I've already seen raw footage taken 2 hours ago of "protestors" in Memphis raiding a liquor store. So that's already a failure. I've also seen raw footage of "protestors" in NYC damaging cop cars a few hours ago, also a failure.

But if the protests remain largely civilized and peaceful they will have my full support. And they will have my 100% respect if the peaceful protestors shun the violent rioters and openly go against them. Mainly speaking of the Antifa flyer rolling around the internet at the moment telling people to bring weapons and burn it all to the ground. Peaceful protestors fight them off, do that and they will have my upmost respect. I've seen them do it before, I saw it on live video in Kenosha a couple years ago and if you search my name on here and the words Kenosha you'll see me praising them for doing that.

And if there happens to be no full scale rioting (damage of property and looting as already occurred) then yes I will eat my words, gladly. I'm HOPING there is no rioting or further violence.

Events such as this are all part of the plan to create race wars in America in order to destroy the country. The actors usually don't even know that they are main parts of the conflict. If you pay attention to the politicians and the talking heads you can usually see the agenda that they are supporting and pushing. Notice who says what over the coming days.

Only five fired and arrested yet I saw way more than 5 in the video, they didn't participate but they knew what was happening.

Here’s what I will say. The cops were fired and charged with second degree murder. So the justice system is working. This leaves the violence ensuing the release of this video is both reckless, and and uncalled for, and furthermore, criminal.

Screw the coming days I notice the fact that this horrific police footage was conveniently released on a Friday afternoon just in time for the weekend. I'm not saying the footage should be kept private by any means, but it's not like they haven't had the footage for what a week now? Why not release it during the week? Why choose today specifically to do so with even mainstream media outlets touting "Protest fears raise over brutal police footage being released on Friday".

These people know what they're doing.

That is an interesting point-- were there more than five? I don't recall seeing more than that, at any one time. At one point, though, I did notice just the hands of one cop, rolling up a taser cartridge, I believe, and his hands looked white; but I figured that he just was very light skinned, and that perhaps the lighting (and even the camera film) were contributing to this white appearance.

They needed to mobilize National Guard troops, for one. Secondly, as I'd previously mentioned, having waited until these men had already been indicted, will obviously take much of the outrage, out of the protester sails, as they will be looking at what appears to be speedy justice, being carried out, instead of anticipating another Blue cover-up.

There was a mass execution of six people in CA a week or two ago where Mexican cartels are suspected and I only saw this story reported by one media outlet. No story about mass shootings, no story about the horrors of guns in the msm, Nothing.
