Miami pedestrian bridge collapses killing several, police say

    The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed several fatalities and multiple vehicles were crushed by the span near Florida International University's campus.

    The bridge was scheduled to open early next year.

    According to FIU, the bridge was lifted off its temporary supported and placed in its permanent position — atop a seven-lane road — on Saturday.

    The $11.4 million bridge was meant to connect the school to the city of Sweetwater. It is part of a $124 million expansion of the campus.

    We should ban pedestrian bridges. We should have school crossing guards instead, no car zones. Think of the children. :angel:

    They cut corners with a new cheaper design. That was the first thing I heard when I saw this.

    wow. terrible! what a crappy, shocking way to go....tapping your fingers to a song on the car radio while waiting at a red light, and bam, crushed to death. jeez. Catastrophic engineering, structural or installation failure. Unfortunately, in this day and age, sabotage and terrorism also have to be considered.

    There's at least a dozen old bridges I see everyday on the way home that were built in the 1930's that the city's been patching up. I'm sure that's in every town.
