In recent weeks the Left has been comparing these to "concentration camps".

A family with children from some other country enters Mexico and then shows up at the U.S. border requesting asylum. Now, obviously while their request is being processed, they will be temporarily held in a detention facility (although "temporary" is a relative word because the process can take a long time to review).

Now, here's the question: Can't the family just go back to Mexico and wait there? Isn't the family free to leave the detention facility anytime and go back to Mexico?

The current strategy seems to be trying to steer away the pregnant ones and have them wait it out in Mexico. They've also been turning away women with lots of little children and not allowing them entrance into the detention facilities, since they don't have the facilities to take on any more small children.

Trump's Policy on Asylum Seekers: "Remain in Mexico"

A federal judge is hearing a lawsuit over whether to allow Trump to keep forcing Central American asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico.

Since late January, the Trump administration has turned back some Central American asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases are processed.

This was inevitable, the detention facilities don't have enough room.

Isn't it fair to say that most of the people applying are abusing the asylum process?

crowding out other persons who might actually have legitimate reason, and making it more difficult for them

If you troubled yourself to read the newspapers you would understand that those seeking asylum are largely Native American refugees from internecine conflict in Central America. They are not Mexican and aren't welcomed there anymore than in the USA. But, unlike that country, it does not claim to be a Christian society founded on biblical principles such as the idea of granting sanctuary. Please do your homework before posting unwarranted criticisms.

since you obviously do not understand the subject here is a primer, just for you:

    https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/06/12/5-facts-about-illegal-immigration-in-the-u-s/

''The number of unauthorized immigrants living in the United States has dropped to the level it was in 2004, and Mexicans are no longer a majority of this population. This decline is due mainly to a large drop in the number of new unauthorized immigrants, especially Mexicans, coming into the country. The origin countries of unauthorized immigrants also shifted during that time, with the number from Mexico declining and the number rising from Central America and Asia, according to the latest Pew Research Center estimates.''

The decline from Mexico is largely attributable to the actions of Obama. Yes, I know it is fashionable and politically correct to blame him for every problem under the sun and that we are to refrain from praising him when praise is due. But a fair and objective view of the subject shows he deserves to be credited with much of that decline while the present increase in other forms of illegal immigration goes to your hero Trump.
