Of course they have bargaining power; everyone does; but the employee would be bargaining from a position of weakness.

One thousand percent true, my friend. If your boat is sinking, and somebody throws you a Slurpee cup to bail it out, even though it'll continue to sink anyway (and barely slow down at all), than that cup is only wasting your time, and the person that offered it to you, really hasn't done a dam thing for you (except maybe extend your terrified, impending death, a teeny tiny bit longer....maybe). He offered you hope of not drowning, while he knew full well you were going to continue drowning.

I get it, so in your world, those drowning are better off cursing the person that threw them what they were qualified to receive, as opposed to seizing that opportunity to do something constructive with it, such as bailing faster or maybe just figuring out how to plug the (*)(*)(*)(*)ing hole with it.

The responsibility to fix your boat rests on your shoulders. Maintaining a condition of perpetual victim seals your fate.

Once crony capitalism is eliminated and once ALL corporate welfare stops, then I will entertain the arguments for abolishing the minimum wage. I am all for reducing government interference in our lives, but there is an order to how it should be done. You don't cut the laws that benefit the poorest before you cut the laws that help the richest. Eliminating the minimum wage at this point in history will only increase the ever widening gap between the classes.

Nonsense. Those jobs went overseas because the Reagan and following admins gave tax breaks to companies who relocated overseas. Jobs moved overseas because of things like NAFTA and other trade agreements which encouraged companies to move production overseas. Had the minimum wage kept pace with inflation since 1966(when it was $1.25 per hour) it would be just under $11.00 per hour today. So to blame the rising minimum wage is pure nonsense, it's nothing but voodoo economic theory as preached by the right, which is designed to destroy the middle class and reduce the average american worker to the same living standard as that of the average worker in Bangladesh.

So you are ok with the average american worker living like the workers do in Bangladesh, with as much chance of a future as they have? We can (and have in the past) do much better than that, or are you saying that the American dream is dead except for those in the top 10%, and that you are ok with that. The biggest determinant as to how well a child will do economically is how well their parents did. Pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps in our economy has become virtually impossible, maybe one out of one hundred will succeed, where 50 years ago 8 out of 10 could succeed. This is the direct result of the economic policies espoused by the likes of Freidman, Hayak, the Heritage foundation and the Cato institute and put into place by Reagan, Bush I & II. The fact is that you have been duped into supporting those who do not have your best interests at heart, and who would see you reduced to serfdom is sad.

I suggest you study about the era between the 1870's and 1930's and see how the lack of a minimum wage and the lack of strong unions kept most workers in lifelong poverty. It wasn't until militant unions ( unions that weren't afraid to stand up to corporate armed goons and fight back) took hold in the workplace that working conditions improved for the average worker. It's a shame you have bought into the fascist corporate BS that has been pushed by neo-nazi's like the Koch Bros (primary funder's and founders of groups like the John Birch Society and the Cato Institute, Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Works)., and their ilk.

I believe we should merely pay labor a form of minimum wage to not work; and then have no need for a statutory minimum wage to be fixed, arbitrarily for employed labor.

Not to you, but it will for the low skill poor youth of this country.

What was unemployment when Reagan came to office? When he left? What was the average GDP growth? Personal median income went up, down or stayed the same?

The responsibility of the employer is to provide a living wage, or not be in business, at all. Stop using people for massive profit.

You are incorrect. In a free society, an employers only wage responsibility is to pay what the two parties have agreed upon for that labor.

A desire for intervention in that agreement is YOUR attempt to use people to gain excessive personal profit.

Question is: What is the limit of your greed?

look at the real picture..why is the minimum wage so low right now? because since 1992 the government has lied about the true inflation rate..this rate is what employers use to determine raises for the working people..under obama federal workers and social security receivers got just 1% raise overe the last 5 years..because he said that was the inflation rate during those 5 years..the true inflation rate for those 5 years was almost 15% each year..so the minimum rate would have been well over 13 dollars an hour if it kept up with the true inflation rate..but they lied to you and you still vote for them..someday you people will wake up and see the what they have been doing to you but it will probably to late to correct the damage

The above is a perfectly legitimate point of view that rendures those who maintain it unable to compete against those who do not.

The advocates of the voluntary will always run circles around the advocates of the mandatory.

Not greed, but better Socialism, well regulated; in a free society, the private sector should be cognizant of its social costs and not expect them to be socialized.

And if the private sector displays no such benevolence, in the absence of rights violation- either real of perceived, is force justified?

It has been in the past, especially if cleaning up the mess may require Income Transfers and Central Planning.

Yeah, that saved me a lot of wasted characters. I have no desire to volley with a deaf advocate of forced income transfer and central planning. Much less one that sees no flat-earth parallels in the "..____ has been justified in the past." position.

Suffice to say, be careful of what you wish for...

Actually, it would be roughly $10 / hour given history, which is exactly what is being proposed.

Minimum wage fluctuates but generally follows a trend. It was in an inflation-adjusted tailspin before the last hike in 2009. No doubt it will take another if the GOP returns to power.

I think that would be closer to socialism, because he is not advocating government own businesses.

Perhaps abolishing the minimum wage is a good idea. It would signal employers they can drop everybody's wages and benefits so board members and stock holders can reap higher profits.

Workers will either get a set of Spalding's and revolt, or accept lower wages and benefits as they enslave themselves further.

Suddenly unions will come into strong demand to protect worker rights and negotiate contracts of protection on their wages and benefits.

Many businesses will support the labor movement when they no longer have consumers to keep them alive.

Or they can start their own business since the profit margins are so huge, they can even start worker co-op companies that dont even need evil greedy CEOs, board members or shareholders if they wish. It doesnt cost much to register a business, hardly slavery when theres a choice either start a business up or choice to accept wages and conditions others offer. Yet still we take away the basic right for many to trade their labor, taking away their independents, making sure they remain low skilled. So many company owners started out working basically for the experience, they worked hard, got to learn the inner workings of the their industry, then do it better. Yep evil capitalism did that for them, gave them opportunity which they took.
