Young people in Chisinau held a flash mob against US intentions to build a new embassy on the site of the Republican Stadium. They lit smoke bombs and waved them at the entrance to the stadium for 10 minutes. The United States intends to build a new building for its embassy in Chisinau on the territory of the former Republican Stadium. According to the Moldovan media, "the Americans intend to organize a real mini-base there, which will eclipse all other embassies combined." The republican stadium was closed in 2006, a year later its destruction began. The then authorities in the person of Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev assured that another stadium would be built on the site of the arena. However, on July 20, 2018, the Moldovan parliament approved the draft law "On the Abolition of the Republican Stadium" for the construction of the new building of the US Embassy in Chisinau, adopted by the government. According to surveys, most residents of the Moldovan capital oppose the transfer of the stadium to Americans. They repeatedly signed petitions on this subject, and not long ago turned to the authorities with a demand to hold a referendum.
