Each your agribusiness dinner and then get back to us about the ethics of agribusiness. People elect to support them or they do not with their money. The rest is just hypocrisy...errr...I mean politics.

The article in the OP deals with BT. BT naturally occurs in dirt, is well established to be safe for all but a handful of insect, and has been used in organic gardening for decades. (http://www.motherearthnews.com/orga...-bt-pesticide-zw0z1304zkin.aspx#axzz2z4vtROUD)

You are so wrapped in your ideological hatred of Monsanto that you seem to ignore that if people do not have access to BT, then the alternative is evil chemical solutions.

According to a poster, Vladimir Putin has said that if GMO's are introduced into Ukraine, it will mean a nuclear war because there is no way he is going to allow the bees to die off. One of the intents of the U.S. in dragging Ukraine into the E.U., even though they can't afford it, is because of Monsanto.

Anyway now with the secrecy surrounding the Atlantic Trade Agreement between the U.S. and E.U., one writer said that the small producers of artisan goods in Europe, who have practiced and perfected their trade over the generations, are getting very worried. As for the U.S., well Obama said it will create more jobs. Yeah at what expense, if true that is. :oldman:

    U R WRONG
Please be aware - BT as built into food has been found NOT to be safe
& Unless you are eating dirt, you will NOT ingest a fraction of the BT toxin
that occurs, built into, Monsanto GMO's

Scientists Discover Bt Toxins Found In Monsanto Crops Damage Red Blood Cells
    http://www.collective-evolution.com...und-in-monsanto-crops-damage-red-blood-cells/

Studies are showing that Bt toxins found in Monsanto crops are harmful to mammalian
blood by damaging red blood cells and more. RBC’s are responsible for delivering
oxygen to the body tissues through blood flow.

Bacillus thuringensis (Bt) is a bacterium commonly used as a biological pesticide. It is a
microorganism that produces toxic chemicals. It occurs naturally in the environment, and
is usually isolated from soil, insects and plant surfaces. Prior to this study, Bt was
thought to be toxic only to insects, but recent studies are proving otherwise.

Dr. Mezzomo and his team of Scientists from the Department of Genetics and
Morphology and the Institute of Biological Sciences, at University of Brasilia recently
published a study that involved Bacillus thuringensis (Bt toxin) and its effects on
mammalian blood. According to the study, the “Cry” toxins that are found in Monsanto’s
GMO crops like corn and soy, are much more toxic to mammals than previously
thought. The study was published in the Journal of Hematology and Thromboembolic
    Diseases(1).

We do not support animal testing, and think it is unnecessary. It should really be a no
brainer that GMO crops cause significant damage to human health. Studies that don’t
require animal testing have already proven the dangers of GMO consumption. This
study unfortunately required the use of Swiss Albino Mice if Bt was to be properly
examined. At the same time, most of us know that the existence of GMOs is completely
    unnecessary.

Advances in genetic engineering promise the expression of multiple Cry toxins in
Bt-plants, known as gene pyramiding. Therefore, studies on non-target species are
requirements of international protocols to verify the adverse effects of these toxins,
    ensuring human and environmental biosafety.

Due to its growing use in agricultural activities, Bt presence has already been detected
in different environmental compartments such as soil and water. Consequently, the
bioavailability of Cry proteins has increased, and for biosafety reasons their adverse
effects might be studied, mainly for non-target organisms. Studies are therefore needed
to evaluate Bt toxicity to non-target organisms; the persistence of Bt toxin and its stability
in aquatic environments; and the risks to humans and animals exposed to potentially toxic
levels of Bt through their diet.(1)

Thus, we aimed to evaluate, in Swiss albino mice, the hematotoxicity and genotoxicity of
    four Bt spore-crystals…

Scientists tested levels ranging from 27 mg to 270 mg over a seven day period, it was
remarkably evident that the Cry toxins were hemotoxic, even at the lowest doses
administered. Hemotoxins destroy red blood cells, disrupt blood clotting and cause
    organ degeneration and tissue damage.

The number of RBC’s, (red blood cells) as well as their size, were significantly reduced,
and so were the levels of hemoglobin for oxygen to attach to. Every factor regarding
RBC’s indicated some level of damage for all levels of toxin administered and across all
cry proteins. The tests clearly demonstrated that Cry proteins resulting from the Bt toxin
were cytotoxic (quality of being toxic to cells) to bone marrow cells. Studies contiually
show that these proteins kill blood cells bytargeting the cell membranes of RBC’s.

Cry1Ab (the protein produced in common Bt corn and soy) induced microcytic
hypochromic anemia in mice, even at the lowest tested dose of 27 mg/Kg, and this
toxin has been detected in blood of non-pregnant women, pregnant women and their
fetuses in Canada, supposedly exposed through diet [34]. These data, as well as
increased bioavailability of these MCA in the environment, reinforce the need for
more research, especially given that little is known about spore crystals’ adverse
    effects on non-target species (1)

Dr. Mezzomo and his team are not the only group of scientists to discover the harmful
effects of Bt toxins. Professor Joe Cummins, Professor Emeritus of Genetics at the
University of Western Ontario has also studied it (2)(3)(4). He concluded that that there
is sufficient evidence that the Bt toxin will impact directly on human health through
damaging the ileum, which is the final section of the small intestine that is responsible for
the absorption of vitamin B12. He also points out that the Bt cry toxin gene has not been
proven to be the same as the natural bacterial gene. As mentioned in the first paragraph,
it occurs naturally in the environment, usually isolated from soil, insects and plant
    surfaces.

It seems that everyday brings forth new information regarding GMO’s. We have so much
evidence that points to just how harmful these foods are, yet they continue to be mass
produced and the corporations that develop them are constantly protected. The truth still
remains, you still have a choice as to what you put into your body. I encourage
everybody reading this to further their research, most ‘industries’ we have on the planet
today really aren’t necessary, we are just made to believe that they are.

"Bt products are found to be safe for use in the environment and with mammals. The EPA (environmental protection agency) has not found any human health hazards related to using Bt. In fact the EPA has found Bt safe enough that it has exempted Bt from food residue tolerances, groundwater restrictions, endangered species labeling and special review requirements. Bt is often used near lakes, rivers and dwellings, and has no known effect on wildlife such as mammals, birds, and fish.

Humans exposed orally to 1000 mg/day for 3-5 days of Bt have showed no ill effects. Many tests have been conducted on test animals using different types of exposures. The results of the tests showed that the use of Bt causes few if any negative effects. Bt does not persist in the digestive systems of mammals.

Bt is found to be an eye irritant on test rabbits. There is very slight irritation from inhalation in test animals which may be caused by the physical rather than the biological properties of the Bt formulation tested.

Bt has not been shown to have any chronic toxicity or any carcinogenic effects. There are also no indication that Bt causes reproductive effects or birth defects in mammals.

Bt breaks down readily in the environment. Because of this Bt poses no threat to groundwater. Bt also breaks down under the ultraviolet (UV) light of the sun.

Even with such widespread use of Bt-based products in the past 50 years, only two incidents of repored allergic reaction have been reported to the EPA. In the first incident, it was concluded that the exposed individual was suffering from a previously diagnosed disease. The second involved a person that had a history of life-threatening food allergies.Upon investigation, it was found that the formulation of Bt also contained carbohydrate and preservatives which have been implicated in food allergy." & There You Have IT !
My above Post outlining the recent Science regarding BT GMO's , proves

Please be aware the effects of Bt Toxins naturally occurring in the soil,

No it is not hogwash. BT is has been recommended for use on corn for decades and is often used in organic farming because it is so selective and natural. Now that Monsanto wants to use it, it is suddenly no longer safe. Perhaps now we should go back to putting oil on each ear of corn as it tassels :roflol:

As for the EPA, an agency that wants to regulate rain water is hardly filled with corporate lackeys.

    Y'know.
At some time, "Social Justice" screams for a win. For the last decades we have witnessed corporate thievery protected, minimally prosecuted, too big to prosecute, etc. but the ill gotten fortunes remain for the most part kept by the perps.

As a Californian ripped off by Enron, I was amazed I never saw an Enron rebate on my electric bill.
Those manipulated inflated profits remain secure in someones private pocket.

    Enough is Enough. :steamed:
    Solution for Social Justice.
The finding, widespread photos on the web, of an "appropriately, not random" lynched CEO with a sign saying "Thief" might just let perps and future perps know - as they buy the government, they should "fear" People for Social Justice more.
It just might make Walmart and Old Navy finally require their Bangladeshi suppliers to operate sweat shops that meet some standard as they repeatedly claim.
Auto manufacturers' CEO who knowingly sell a defective, lethal product and pampered by the government.
Banks and Trading Houses CEO's that knowingly rip people off and remain likewise "protected".

While the elite gain more and more government protection they should realize more and more fear of retribution from their victims denied justice in a corporationist system.
Otherwise we will continue to be victimized more & more in steady, incremental doses that result in no pension in ones old age and a more difficult hamster wheel to maintain a middle middle class life style.

Speaking of elections.... both parties support big agro subsidies, so with bipartisan support, it becomes rather difficult to buy anything not affiliated with these companies.

Even if you do manage to buy completely local produce, it doesn't really affect the big picture when you consider how much money they get from taxes. In short, we ALL subsidize these companies, since it's not a matter of choice at the moment.

Very few politicians fight these subsidies -- even the "small government" conservatives.

People can surely do that, but you're a conservative, right? I figure we could agree that farm subsidies are a waste of tax money -- primarily because the companies don't even need the money.

No I am a progressive/left wing libertarian (or so I am told by most political quizzes). Farm subsidies are a waste of money, but since the milk price supports go into our school cafeterias and the ethanol subsidies go into our gas tanks, I suppose most of us do sort share the spoils at some point. Doesn't change that I think the left wing autocrats who want to try to have the government micromanage business subsidize these business with every tomato they buy instead of growing themselves.

Well, if they were actually left wing, they wouldn't be subsidizing business to begin with.

The left wing in America would be considered center right in most of our peers.

It's more a choice between the center right and the far right here.

But all that aside, ethanol subsidies are a significant problem, since they drive up the cost of corn for food stock, while at the same time, they also encourage more ethanol content in gasoline, which leads to more engine degradation in vehicles that are only designed for gasoline consumption.

You've probably noticed how most gas stations mention that their fuel contains "up to 10% ethanol". Unless you drive a vehicle that is specifically designed for ethanol, that ethanol content slowly degrades your engine faster over time than pure gasoline would.

The reason for increased ethanol content is that the corn lobby has a lot of influence over government policies. Arguments have been made regarding the environment, but they don't add up when considering most people don't drive ethanol compatible vehicles. Ethanol actually reduces fuel economy as well.

Well there has always been a certain hypocrisy in the American left wing from my POV. Of course the ethanol is bad. It is why one has to put the fuel additives in with their 2 cycle unless they want to buy a new weed whacker every season and a half to two seasons.

I just don't get bent of of shape about it. There is an overwhelming demand for that which companies like Monsanto produce, or else it would not be produced. People have choices. I see too many people on the left claiming to be victims and demanding government action when their own inaction in making life choices that reflect their politics is why their great evil of the year happens. If you don't like Monsanto or GMO food, then don't buy a single thing that contains a vegetable at the grocery store. Otherwise, you are being part of that which you perceive as the problem and not the solution. I, for instance, have drastically reduced, although not completely eliminated, beef from my diet. It isn't because I don't like beef, but because I have concerns about the industry. I don't sit around complaining about evil ranchers while stuffing myself full of hamburger. I instead local source most of my beef and buffalo from farms that engage in better practices than some of the mass-produced livestock sources.

I would agree that personal action certainly is a good start. But again, my main concern is that I'm forced to pay for these things via taxation.

I literally don't have a choice because of lobbyism and pork.

We're basically reaching a point where revolution may eventually become the only option other than just moving to another country. Obviously, the latter option is a lot easier.

The more self sufficient one is, the more one can afford to reduce their taxable income I suppose. I see it as taxes are what they are. If they are not spending it on one thing I don't like, they will be spending it on something else I don't like. Add in all the federal borrowing, and I just do not feel a personal connection to budget policy like that. If nothing else, I figure all the taxes I will ever pay in my lifetime won't break even with the amount of federal tax money that has gone to assist elderly relatives and such, so I overall feel that I have, do, and will continue to have benefits beyond that which I will ever be drained of. Money is just paper.

I want to retire outside the US. I would move today if I could get a job/make a living where I want to go, but until that be the case, just gotta keep putting one foot in front of the other.
