My apologies if I misunderstood your position. As the context of this discussion is intentional violence, an on-topic response would be addressing that specifically. Please help me understand why you suggest "it would be nice if people had to take a class" to buy a firearm and how that is relevant to this topic. Thank you.

 

Since your goal in life appears to be to find things wrong with what I propose, what is your suggestion?

 

Interestingly in California some years ago, Gov. Jerry Brown initiated a "realignment" of criminal statutes which reduced many felonies down to misdemeanors, and also eliminated mandatory sentencing enhancements for crimes committed with firearms. We are now witnessing the results.

My position: Owning a firearm is a very serious responsibility. Committing a crime with one is not a "mistake." It is an intentional act of violence. You commit a crime with a gun, you go away for a LONG, LONG time. Take the violent actors out of society and watch "gun violence" all but disappear. But the pols in the big blue jurisdictions lack the will to hold actual individuals accountable for their depraved acts of violence, so we just get more and more of it. This is something the gun-grabbers are either too stupid to understand, or too dishonest to acknowledge.

More educated gun owners should reasonably result in less negligent discharge. But that is not the topic of this thread and is thus off-topic.

Again, this is not supported by the facts - merely your speculation. And to be on-topic, you'll need to differentiate between intentional deaths and negligent deaths.

See, now here's where we could stumble onto a rational, productive discussion in good faith. I'll start...

Policies that impose real consequences on bad actors lead to better public safety outcomes. It is my position that the policies emplaced by leadership in the big blue jurisdictions are largely detrimental to the residents of those places by absolving bad actors of accountability. This emboldens bad actors to act even more badly, and we end up with dead 13-year-olds -- who ought to be worthy of more than a shoulder shrug.

 

We tried jailing our way out of crime and it didn't work. Now, it seems we have advocates thinking we can deal with crime by eschewing jail and focusing on improving education, reducing poverty, etc.

And this is the folly of anti-gun legislation. Laws are for the law-abiding. Murder is already illegal. Yet it happens 60 times/day across the country.
