Not only are several Republican lawmakers in Kansas switching Democratic but another Republican left the GOP in California. Seems Republicans are hitting rock bottom fast.

"California Republican Party gets even smaller: A GOP lawmaker defects to the Democrats" Sacramento Bee

“As the Republican Party has drifted further right, I and my votes have shifted to the left,” he said. “I can either keep fighting to change the Republican party, or I can fight for my constituents.”

The best option probably is to have moderate Republicans migrate to the Democratic Party. This will help to force the left more to the center, leaving the Republicans to complete their death spiral.

That has already happened in California. Two former Republicans were part of the Blue wave in Orange county.

Trump could end up being the best thing that ever happened to the Democrats.

In Nevada the Republican senator & governor were replaced by Democrats. Arizona voted for a Democrat to take McCain's seat.

So all former Republicans are idiots to stay in office as Democrats? Republicans are so pure that they like to lose elections!

It is great to see newly elected congressman Harley Rouda being interviewed on CNN tonight. Rouda was recently a Republican but challenged longtime incumbent Dana Rohrabacher and won as a Democrat.

Poor baby. He can't get re-elected without adjusting his beliefs, if he has any.

Actually Maienschein is representing his constituents like a representative should do. To condemn Republicans for following the direction of their voters is foolish. During Schwarzenegger's first year as governor he presented several propositions that were all voted down by the citizens. Immediately thereafter Arnold replaced his Republican advisors with Democrats and served 2 terms as governor. You see, in California we understand pragmatic governance.

It's good news that most Americans aren't as extreme in their views as the Republican Party has become.Democracy works best when its leaders cling to the middle ground on issues. Extremism on either end always leads to more conflict and increasing government failure to function. The actions on the part of these Republicans are simply a growing recognition that the Republican Party has become too extreme for most Americans to support.

Republicans can no longer win on votes so now they will push the narrative that any politician that doesn’t push their agenda is weak.

The republicans are facing a demographic time bomb — they must either drop some of the more extreme measures or die off as a political party.

The Republican Party no longer offers middle of the road candidates. They purged moderates from the party thru primarying tactics between 2010 & 2018.

The Trump tax break actually hurt California homeowners intentionally. Republicans here go with their wallet and voted out all GOP congress people who cost them money. California Republicans feel awkward around typical bible-belt [ie. Texas] conservatives. Embarrassed actually.

This makes sense. If you have ambition and want to have a future in state politics, particularly in California, which doesn't have a viable Republican Party, it makes sense to switch to what is in reality the only game in town.

    Dream along with me...

"As of January 2019, Ballotpedia staff have counted 113 state legislators who have switched parties since 1994. Ballotpedia has counted 34 state senators who have switched parties and 79 state representatives.

Number of state lawmakers who switched from Democrat to Republican: 70

    • State senators: 22
    • State representatives: 48

Number of state lawmakers who switched from Republican to Democrat: 16

    • State senators: 5
    • State representatives: 11"
    https://ballotpedia.org/State_legislators_who_have_switched_political_party_affiliation

There's been a flurry of Democrat-to-Republican party switchers in the last year or so, but historically speaking, way more Democrats switch to the Republican party each year than Republicans to Democrats. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_party_switchers_in_the_United_States

As for the claim that it's the Republicans who are getting more extreme, I've debunked that several times already, but here it is again, from the independent Pew Research:

As you can see, the Republicans have barely moved, and younger Republicans tend to be more liberal than older Republicans, while the Democrats have veered far over into deep left lala land.

It's Official: Democrats Are The Extremists Today

Partisanship: Everyone knows that the country is more politically polarized than ever, but most don't know why. Data from the highly respected Pew Research Center provides a definitive answer. It's because Democrats have moved sharply to the extreme left.

My state has become virtually 100 percent Democrat. It is no shock he wants to hold his job forever. He has no honor.

Gov Kasich did the same thing in Ohio when GOP policies were failing for the citizens of the state.

Kansas now has a Dem governor and a re-energized Dem party that is attracting moderates away from the the hardline GOP.

The political pendulum is finally starting to move left again.

It has nothing to do with representation. You know that. It is always about votes and political power.

It is difficult for some Republicans to acknowledge internal resistance to Trump within the GOP. Arizona is a perfect example. Both of the former senators [McCain/ Flake] were thoroughly Republican but with principles/ independence. Now that long-time Red state elected a female Democrat as senator.

"Votes" create "power". Not a 'rocket science' notion to understand democracy.
