I live 10 minutes on foot from the Beauharnois dam.
And size of population has nothing to do on how dam are built, unless I missunderstand the first part of your post. The in-river type of dam are also great in case of high population density since there isn't any reservoire.

    https://www.esfi.org/resource/home-electrical-fires-184

Home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year, nearly than 500 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage. Electrical distribution systems are the third leading cause of home structure fires.

I know they break easy and are a pain to get replaced. But also easier to clean.

We had one serious incident in 1998 when we got the mother of all ice storm. Our powerlines are well built but that isn't enough when you dump tons of ice rain on the lines.
We worked around the clock to bring power back on and have now modified the whole power transmission system so that main centers aren't feeded by a single junction.
In any case all damage was either covered by your personnal home insurrances or by the electrical company, like the food in the freezer lost.

Many cities here ban wood burning since it contributes to bad air quality and most condo owner are too dumb to have their system cleaned so there were quite a few incident. Wood burning is good in rural region but in a big city... Gas is still the best in industrial use though, like restaurant, hospital and industry.

My bet is that the local electric company is a major contributor to campaigns there.....

Idiotic since line loss from electrical transportation wastes natural gas heat energy used to create the electricity. Another problem with all electric compared to natural gas is when a storm hits or a tornado tears up a neighborhood, natural gas is still available when electricity isn't.

Well, not just line loss, but there are losses everytime the energy changes forms. For electrical, the NG is first burned (less than 100%) , then it runs a turbine (changed heat to mechanical), which turns a generator (changed mechanical to electrical), then the line losses and transformer losses, then goes to house, to run heat pump or heating coils (again a loss of energy). In all, burning NG directly (75% efficient) heats almost 2.5 times as air/water than does electricity to use for the same heating of air/water. I had an all electric house, but when I changed out the hot water heater, I went from electric tank water heater to tankless Natural gas. Saved about $60 in electricity each month, for about $25 in a gas bill, AND I heat more water than I used to. Used to get a half cold shower if my wife showered before me in the AM. Hasn't happened since the tankless.

If you live 10 minutes away, than you should know that Beauharnois is not a dam at all, and the term is "run of river hydroelectric power generating station" not "in river type" all dams are built in rivers or moving water.
    https://image.slidesharecdn.com/d6e...-storage-power-plant-13-638.jpg?cb=1461063178

As posted earlier Canada dug a 16 mile canal diverting the St Lawrence to creating this power station in the 1930's. Very few rivers around the world and or in the USA t generate that kind of flow or "pressure" to turn a series of turbines to produce enough electricity to make a "run of river hydroelectric power generating station" a viable source. The solution "dams and reservoirs to increase the water flow through the turbines. Also diverting water away from any large river hinders shipping on any river large enough to build a plant such as the Beauharnois power generating station.

Population has everything to do with it my friend, Canada has 38 million people and a $1.7 trillion economy to supply electricity to, the USA has 328 million people and a $19.39 trillion economy to supply electricity to.

Canada produces 60% of its electricity from Hydro electric plants, or 385 TWh/year, The USA produces 6% of its electricity from Hydro electric plants or 292 TWH/year.

The fact that Canada has the natural resources to supply 60% of its 38 million residents electrical needs using hydro generations is not in any way comparable to what the USA needs or requires to supply electricity to its 328 million residents.

    Apples and oranges.

And by the way what does this mean?

In french it's called "le barrage de beauharnois" and Hydro-Quebec who I work for, calls it "le barrage de beauharnois". Barrage is french for dam! Now if you think you know better than Hydro-Quebec...

The race is and has been on around the world to figure out the practical use of fusion energy production which if ever perfected will produce unlimited low cost power.

Invest in Home Depot and Lowes and buy away from new construction. I have a 93% gas furnace, but except in the most severe conditions, I heat with an insert on a gas fireplace ,,, just down the road from Cleveland. I also have a gas stove. The bills I just paid, $48 for gas, $20 for electric. I've had heat pumps before. 2x or 3x the monthly cost. I'll buy used before I bend over to the alarmists who tell us the oceans are about to swallow us, then buy property on Martha's Vineyard.

Are you sure you are not a weird being? fine you can call it what ever you want. and the rest of the whole post went right over your head.

Is the water level higher on the northeast side aka the St Lawrence river, that the southwest side the canal of Beauharnois side ? if it is than it is a dam.

You are the one stating it was a in river type without a reservoir, So if it is restricting the natural water flow in the St Lawrence river it would be a dam. So your statements have been it as no reservoir, So the St Lawrence river did not widen when the aka dam was put into operation?

'And you work for these people? seriously what are you the night janitor?

Trump has done more to save the planet and move the country to hydro and other renewables than any President in recent history. He's flipped 3 Circuit Courts. Descendants of the radicals who fought the Tellico Dam won't have as easy a job as they did in the 1970's. BTW. The snail darters that almost cost us our planet will be just fine.

It won't be as easy to shut down clear cutting under power lines. I could smell CA burning in OH. If he could flip a few more courts and add some more Americans to the SCOTUS, he may deserve a Nobel for his contribution to saving the planet.

Anybody else think an all electric powered “life” would be very easy to control? Especially when we’re often told only central authority can address climate change effectively. Nah, that’s just crazy.

    Its thermodynamics.

We could block the Missouri river and produce enough hydro power to half the heartland of America

I've had one for about 20 years or so. I don't remember the price, but I think it wasn't that much more expensive, maybe I got it on sale.

It works best with high quality stainless steel pans with thick bottoms. Aluminum pans will jump and don't work very well. The surface still gets hot because the pan gets hot and heats the surface. It gets hot like any other surface you'd set a hot pan on would get.

In Portland electric heating is quite common. But then the electricity comes from a hydroelectric dam up the river a bit. And it rarely gets too cold so high efficiency heat pumps work really well.

In Boulder the city built hydroelectric plants that tapped into the energy in the water supply pipes. Avoiding the use of resevoirs. There is also one at the mouth of Boulder Canyon, right on the river, no resevoir.

how very interesting... prevent homeowners from enjoying cheaper, reliable, better cooking and heat, all the while using that same 'ugly' source to produce an alternative for them at a significantly increased cost...

are you sure you're not a dem?

and a majestic storm it was...

the serenity was priceless, the beauty was breathtaking...

i was part of the restoration crews sent to the northeast and eventually into quebec, spent nearly 6 weeks there before returning home...

hasn't been anything in comparison since... shameful
