I agree with much of your post, but your overall assumption is self defeating. If the African-American Georgia Citizens are counted in the statistics, then they would have had to be tested. The fact that 32.4% of the population accounts to 80% of the documented case. Then obviously, they have been tested at a greater rate then the other races. Now, without a statically analysis comparing hospitalization rate of African Americans vs the other races, your claim of 250% is unsupportable. You also have to consider how many of that 80% are asymptomatic.

Now, to understand why the African American community is hit harder by the virus, you have to consider several factors. Many of the risk factors such as high colestrol, high blood pressure, diabetes and COPD are more prevalent within the African American community then any other race. Further, the media has shown that people living in public housing can not exercise social distancing. You also have to consider that many within the community do not practice social distancing or wear masks in public. One of the reasons for this is that the elected officials within the community do not practice proper protection from Coronavirus. One example is the mayor of Atlanta. While she has supported a mandate requiring the wearing of masks. she herself does not practice what she preaches. She tested positive, but did not self quarantine herself and was often filmed in public places without a mask. This include events where she was up close and personal with others.

When you add all these factors together, the 80% is understandable.

Someone in another thread pointed out that the virus rates in Atlanta were not really any higher than the average for the whole state, which I found surprising.

So African Americans being concentrated in the big city here is probably not the explanation.

    Oh lordy ...

Fast food and convenience foods are NOT cheaper, they're actually considerably more expensive. A child can understand the math on this, so no point pretending you don't understand.

Be honest, for g-d's sake. Choosing those foods has NOTHING to do with poverty (other than being one of the behaviours which cause and perpetuate poverty).

The point is that no matter how poor you are, you can help prevent transmission in your household/workplace/public etc, by altering your behaviour. Changing behaviour costs nothing.

People keep themselves healthy by eating properly and getting plenty of exercise. More Govt advice and help than has ever existed, hasn't reduced obesity one jot. In fact, the more we're taught how to avoid it, the fatter we get. Why do you think that is? Could it be because PEOPLE will do what they will?

    All of them behavioural.

PS: Don't even try to blame population densities. Not when Bangkok, Tokyo, Taipei, etc etc have the much lower virus numbers that they do.

All lifestyle related disease states, and lifestyle disease is BEHAVIOURAL.

Not social distancing or wearing masks is BEHAVIOURAL.

High density living does not equate to more cases unless BEHAVIOURAL changes aren't made.

And you can't blame the State's leader, when other folk who are doing it right have the same leader.

Though not entirely relevant in Georgia, the Virus has not decimated the homeless community as originally anticipated.

There are a large number of people that immolate what they see from public figures. If these public figures are setting a bad example then it would impact the situation.

We don't teach how to avoid it in school.

So, I'm not sure how you think this "advice" is being transmitted.

Also, yes. As we've seen with COVID, people make their decisions based on all sorts of feel good nonsense rather than on implementing "good advice".

People don't even follow the law. Look at Flint, MI. People don't even give a crap about damaging the brains of a whole generation of children. In fact, law enforcement doesn't even get applied.

It should be no surprise that Trump would sign executive orders freeing corporations to ignore the health of their employees, resulting in communities experiencing waves of COVID.

That's just the kind of government we have right now. And, it's the kind of corporations that our economic system rewards.

I'm not sure what you're saying here, but viruses spread faster when humans are closer together.

That's why medical science is directing the use of masks and social distancing. That's why the CDC plan for opening our economy depends on FAR more testing and contact tracing than we are doing, because that leads to being able to isolate those in early stages. (You can see it on whitehous.gov)

And, state leaders absolutely ARE to blame if they aren't promoting medical science in the face of a communicable disease based disaster like COVID19.

There will always be those of us who DO look to medical science and behave appropriately regardless of IDIOTS like Trump and those leading Florida and some other states. Those people are actively causing the death toll to be higher.

My behavior does not excuse their lethal leadership in ANY WAY.

Dude, the example from Melbourne actually backs up my point. Beyond initial carelessness (and yes, it did mean carelessness .. because the virus had been around for months at that point, so everyone knew) when using lifts and laundry rooms, then further carelessness inside each apartment, they still managed to get that outbreak under control within a couple weeks of going to proper protocols. That shows you how important behaviour is!

Furthermore, there are very densely populated cities in Asia which never had the problems NYC had. That's because citizen compliance with protocols is much higher.

Exactly. You're backing up my point too!

Since we know that people in densely populated areas are more likely to spread the virus around, it follows that if you live in such a place, you MUST adhere to those protocols (masks, isolation within the home, distancing, scrupulous hand hygiene, etc).

    Behavioral doesn't have a u.

Poorer communities tend to live in greater density and tend to work jobs where attendance in person is required. It's more likely to be physical labor, where wearing masks and taking other precautions is more difficult.

We've seen what happens when Trump requires workers to work without protection. Cities with meat packing plants (for example) could be identified on maps, as the unhealthy conditions that Trump wrote an EXECUTIVE ORDER to establish caused waves of COVID19.

Poorer communities tend to have a higher incidence of health conditions that make the population more vulnerable and they tend to have less healthcare to address or prevent those issues.

So, I don't know WHAT the heck you're actually trying to get at here.

My suspicion is that you are attempting to blame poor people for getting sick.

As for your comments on other countries, you've not made ANY effort to compare what's going on in those countries to what is going on here.

Until you do, ANYTHING you say about their greater success against COVID MUST be ignored entirely.

For example, some counries have been more successful in part by taking draconian steps that wouldn't even be LEGAL here.

    No.

It means that when being in a situation where there are others, you need to wear a mask and stay 6' apart.

It applies to everyone everywhere. The virus doesnt care if there's a party going on or whether people are worshipping their various gods. It doesn't check the bank accounts of those where you work or shop. It doesn't check out the environment.

    1) On the contrary, you're trying REALLY hard to avoid admitting that it's behavioural. We can only assume that you have some kind of issue with attributing freely made choices to people with brown skin.

    2) The virus is the same in those other countries. It loves humans.

    3) Many of them had greater success due to CITIZEN COMPLIANCE, with or without 'draconian laws'. Japan is a good example. Heck, even Sweden leaves America in the shade on this. When the folk in both nations were asked politely (not ordered) to take extra care they didn't whine like spoiled babies, they just did it.

The root cause of poverty is the greed obsessed neoliberal economy that is STEALING from the middle and lower class and ENRICHING the wealthy elite 1%.

The must be ENDED by eliminating the NEFARIOUS GOP taxcuts and RAISING taxes on the wealthy to REPAY everything that they have STOLEN from We the People.

The wealthy elite will survive and so will the economy. In fact the economy with THRIVE without the onerous BURDEN of neoliberalist GREED.

You know the same stuff is happening all over the West, right? And in many of those places a Leftist Govt is in power.

It really has nothing to do with the politics of here and now. It's residual to generations of deliberate degradation of social foundations, and deliberate fostering of dependence and helplessness. Add to that generations of safety and plenty leading to a (very) false sense of security, and you end up with societies made up of people who take insane risks with both their social foundations, and their assets - whether real or labor value.

As for why this was done to us ..... you'd need to speak to the independently wealthy power base responsible. They're the ones who decided that because they can afford to indulge vanities and pecadillos, the peasants should be encouraged to do the same. Didn't matter that a working stiff can barely afford to keep his family fed and housed, much less set aside vast resources for 'feelings, fun, & freedoms'.

66% of ALL workers can no longer afford the American Dream because of the GREED OBSESSED neoliberal economy aided and abetted by the GOP.

Get back to me after you have done some research into the neoliberal economic model that has destroyed America and is trying to destroy every other nation that is stupid enough to believe the lies that it espouses.
