Could be false flag in that Putin appears to like to have false “reasons “ to escalate his terrorist actions against Ukraine.

    ...

“Of course, we enjoy watching and predicting an increase in attacks,” said Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak. “But of course, we have nothing to do directly with it.”

“What is growing in Russia is the karmic payment that Russia will gradually pay in aggravated form for everything it does in Ukraine,” he added.

Tuesday’s strikes, however, seem qualitatively different than previous attacks. For starters, this was not a symbolic blow against the Russian state, such as the murky drone strike on the Kremlin. Instead, it appeared to strike near the heart of Russia’s political and economic elite. Some of the drones apparently hit or flew over Rublyovka, a prestigious suburban area in Moscow’s southwest where oligarchs, politicians and top officials live in luxurious gated communities. The area is also very close to Putin’s Novo-Ogaryovo residence where the Russian leader is known to spend most of his time.

    ... https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/30/europe/moscow-drone-attacks-russia-intl/index.html

Certainly interesting developments. Will this continue? Will it get worse? Who is ultimately behind it?

Seems like after bombing their own strategically significant pipeline, and bombing the only bridge linking Crimea with their mainland, that Russian military planners might just skip a few steps and start bombing themselves.

Multiple, usually reliable news sources are reporting that the attack occurred however it's important not to make mountains out of mole hills, (that's Russia's job). To clarify:

    1) Up to now Ukraine's western supporters have been unwilling to provide long range drones capable of carrying large payloads so Ukraine has been working on developing its own indigenous designs for some time. This attack would appear to indicate this process has nearly finished and they have at least one design that does work although from the information available to date the so far the payload isn't huge. (Then again there are multiple potential targets that simply don't require large payloads.)

    2) While they may have a design that works they don't yet (as far as is publicly known) have the ability to produce them in large numbers. According to reports I've seen there were only about a dozen or so drones used in this attack and the amount of damage while unknown at this time doesn't appear to have been large. Least ways no-one is reporting extensive damage.

    3) Even Russia struggles to produce enough drones to meet all its needs so it is quite highly likely it will take time for Ukraine to build up a large stockpile (assuming they haven't already done so in secret in preparation for their new offensive which again seems unlikely). The point is though even if they don't have them in large numbers now it will be very difficult if not impossible for Russia to prevent Ukraine building them in quantity in the future, once they source all the components.

    4) The best part though is that they don't really need them in large numbers yet. The long range drones they do have are already having a massive multiplier effect on the battlefield because they are forcing Putin to redeploy badly needed air defense systems away from the front to defend Moscow, Saint Petersburg and important infrastructure across Western Russia. Putin is desperate to maintain the illusion among affluent city dwellers that Russia is not at war or at the least not effected by it. Ukraine's long range drones are going to piss all over that narrative as long as Ukraine can maintain a reasonable tempo of attacks on targets the Russian public can't ignore.

So good news, yet another example of why it sucks to be Putin.

If civilians are killed, it could change public sentiment about the war. If the Russian people start to perceive this as a defensive war, it'll be a whole new ball game.

I hear they've been laughing that it was the elites whose homes were threatened in Moscow. But yes, I agree it's a very risky endeavor for Ukraine to appear to be attacking Russian civilians. But so far, it seems Ukraine denies all involvement and anti-government Russians are claiming responsibility with a stated goal of overthrowing Putin.

The line was crossed when Putin invaded Ukraine in 2014 and in 2022. So are you saying that it is ok for Putin to invade and kill 2 day old babies but Ukraine should not defend itself from Russian terroris?

No I did not pull it out of my butt. Ok I did reread it and now I assume that you are saying the Belograd incidents were before this incident. The big issue is that Ukraine has the right to strike back but Putin and some people think that the fight needs to stop at the border. If Putin did not cross the border with his invasions we would not be talking about the Belograd incidents vs Moscov incidents.

    Wrong. Again.
Serious question: Are you perhaps a slight bit impaired right now?

I'm wondering why the paper bear is bitching again. What further threat/redline could there be then the one they already drew and which was recently crossed?

^ None of that contemplates Russia as the morally right, or legally right, party. If you paid attention to other threads on this and similar subjects (Ukraine) we've participated in together, you'd know I don't support Russian aggression ffs.
