Most of the "crap" is mundane, harmless crap. We really don't have things too bad at all in the US, considering how stupid and monstrous human beings can be. Especially when they decide to base and enforce laws on religious ideology..

I was a very young girl when I got pregnant. I defied my strict baptist parents and the church elders who secretly wanted me to get an abortion. Religion is so very hypocritical.

It really is. Human nature pretty much dictates that organized, social religion will create hypocrites and Scheinheiligen.

The key thing to that "abortifacient" was that they only expected it to take effect if God made it happen.
It can't really be known but for all we know the herb they administered to the woman may have been inefficacious, so it would have really required supernatural action to make a miscarriage happen.
This type of thing isn't uncommon. In 2 Kings 20:7 we read of the prophet Isaiah telling a king to apply a paste of fig leaves that would miraculously make his boil go away. Or Elisha adding some ordinary flour to a soap to make it not poisonous (2 Kings 4:38-41). The overall idea seems to have been that by adding something physical, those looking on would be more likely to believe a miracle was taking place, and it would also demonstrate their faith (in the case of king Hezekiah) or consent (in the case of a wife suspected of having been unfaithful). The whole community would see that the woman had sworn an oath and agreed that if she had been unfaithful she would miscarry.

What you have brought up really requires a longer explanation and is too complicated to discuss here, so it's kind of unfair to be trying to bring that subject up in this thread.
