Speaking of horses... you ever see those Lipizzaner stallions? What? From Portugal, the Lipizzaner stallions. The most highly trained horses in the world. They’re all white. Yes sir. "Yes sir" you’re aware they’re all white? Or "Yes sir" you’ve seen them? Yes sir, I’ve seen them. Yes sir, I was aware that they’re are all white. They're not from Portugal, they’re from Spain. And at birth, they’re not white. They’re black... sir. I didn’t know that. But they are from Portugal... Some of the things they do defy belief. Their training program is simplicity itself. You just stick a cattle prod up their ass and you can get a horse to deal cards... Simple matter of voltage.
Crimson Tide. Next: "But you're beautiful, Carol. Your skin, your long neck, the back, the line of you. You're why caveman chiseled on walls."

I watched it. Confronting. Lot of splashy violence in the beginning. I couldn’t understand why there was no air support for the landing. There are some people who shouldn’t be in the armed forces as combatants. That poor tortured translator for one. it was funny when they thought they’d found Ryan, but it was the wrong one, whose siblings were still at school. a good film. Tom Hanks is reliable for being in good films and playing nice blokes who have minor flaws.

They couldn't have close air support during the landing as the risk of friendly fire would be too high. The aerial and naval bombardment took place before hand in an attempt to soften up the defences. The Royal Navy played a massive part in the operation which tends to get overlooked these days as does the role played by Commonwealth troops. That's what happens when it's Americans who make all the films I suppose. Private Ryan is one of the better ones though.
Montegriffo is right. Back in those days, aerial bombing was primitive compared to the laser-guided precision of today. The chances of dropping bombs on the beach where the soldiers were landing was too high to have that kind of support. When I first watched it, I didn't know who the old man was walking to the cemetery at the start. I thought it might be Ryan, but as the movie progressed, I thought it might be Captain Miller or someone else. I didn't even know if Private Ryan would actually be saved. I watched that movie with no foreknowledge of what was going to happen. And as I watched the movie, I wondered what the point of this movie was - what was this movie intending to convey? And then, at the end of the final battle, as Captain Miller is dying, he tells Ryan to "Earn this. Earn it." And Ryan transitions into the old man at the cemetery. And he tells his wife, "Tell me I have lived a good life. Tell me I'm a good man." It was at that moment that I understood that everything that happened in that movie was a lead-up to this final scene ... that Ryan had led his whole life trying to "earn it." That scene has special meaning to me, for my son, who has deployed to combat 4 times, is also trying to "earn it." He is trying to live a good life and trying to be a good man. He has been through all the horrors of war, and when he was seriously wounded, his comrades saved him. I asked him one time how he deals with the fact that he cheated death, and yet others he fought with didn't. I'll never forget his answer ... "They were the sacrifices, Dad. Each one is like Jesus on the cross. Each one died so that others could live." Seth
Not only the beaches, there were a lot of troops and special forces dropped behind the enemy lines before the soldiers started landing on the beaches. The taking of Pegasus Bridge by airborne commandos of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire light infantry plus the US Rangers scaling the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc to destroy the artillery battery overlooking Omaha beach being two of the most famous examples.
" Working 18 hours a day and being lonely 24. " Much underappreciated Actress who is still with us. This Movie a one of a kind for the genre.
