MSNBC’s Melissa Harris Perry: Detroit Is What Happens When Government Is Too Small

Did you read that headline above? It is almost too hard to believe some of the things that come out of the mouths of the talking heads at MSNBC. The complete lack of understanding of who was in control and running the government of Detroit for 50 plus years and the control the unions had over the car industry in what was once one of America's most prosperous industrial hubs, seems to not even register in the mind of MSNBC talking bot Melissa Harris Perry.

The city of Detroit Michigan which recently declared bankruptcy was run by Democrat governors for 51 years and they did exactly as they pleased, paid outrageous pensions to public sector employees and had automaker unions do the same in private industry and Melissa Harris Perry actually believes that. "This is what it looks like when government is small enough to drown in your bathtub and it is not a pretty picture.”

It is simply beyond us how anyone with any intellectual ability could look at what happened in Detroit over the last 5 decades and make such an utterly ignorant statement. Why MSNBC tolerates such preposterous lunacy is beyond comprehension.

Read the transcript of Perry's statement below and watch the stunning video after that:

“But this lack of tax base is also exactly the thing that many Republicans would impose on us even when our cities have sufficient populations, even when our communities have sufficient populations…

This is what it looks like when government is small enough to drown in your bathtub and it is not a pretty picture.”

    .............More at the Link.............

How can anyone be this stupid?

Seriously, no joke, wtf is wrong with these idiots?

Ed Schultz said Detroit became a Conservative Utopia, that's why it failed. He said decades of Republican policies are what led to it's demise. Seriously, he said that! That network is for complete dumb asses.

Automation, robotics, outsourcing, then over taxing and mismanagement once the bottom fell out is what destroyed Detroit. It should have been bull dozed over a decade ago, and the materials that could have been salvaged should have, and the rest disposed of properly. Instead they just wilted away.

What do Righties think MADE Detroit become what was "once one of America's most prosperous industrial hubs"?

With no unions, no good pay, and a city leadership that did not build infrastructure, Detroit would have simply been another podunk, poverty-ridden city just like so many in the South have continuously been since the Civil war.

What gutted Detroit is a NATIONAL policy of allowing our capital and industry to flee the country subsidized favorable tax laws and a complete absence of enforced standards and rules for the poisonous and deadly products we import back into our country.

NO other industrial country allowed their companies to do such BS, including China.

It wasn't a failure for the last 50 years though, not even half.

I'm not surprised that different people have different opinions on any given subject, but frankly, I am somewhat stunned at the level of all out sheer stupidity exhibited by almost every fool on MSNBC. It's actually shocking to see such blatant mental retardation passed off as "news and information".

I still want to know what Daddy Warbucks is funding this cesspool of television, because they cannot be generating enough ad revenue to cover their expenses. No way. Some Daddy Soros is slipping them allowance and rent money.

Of course not. It takes time to completely destroy an infrastructure of that magnitude. Decades of abuse funding public sector unions eventually tear it all down. Duh.

    Post-war decline
    Main article: Decline of Detroit

Scholars have produced many studies documenting the fall of Detroit from one of the world's premier industrial cities in 1945 to a much smaller. weaker city in the 21st century, struggling to survive against the loss of industry and population, against crime, corruption and poverty. Boyle also blames the big corporations. He summarizes the scholarly consensus in 2001:

"Detroit was betrayed by a lack of political vision, torn asunder by racial conflict, and devastated by deindustrialization. Detroit's problems peaked in the late 1960s and the 1970s. Since then the city has struggled to recover, to build a new economy and a new polity. However noble the goals, though, these efforts have failed to reverse Detroit's deterioration. Motown remains in the grip of the crisis that began fifty years ago."

Here's a great follow up to this article:

25 Facts About The Fall Of Detroit That Will Leave You Shaking Your Head

Yup, those Republicans did all of this. And one more fun fact, over ten years (2000 - 2010), Detroit lost 1 citizen every 22 minutes, on average.

Limited minds inspire limited innovation that garner limited capital that produce limited citizens.

There hasnt been a republican mayor of destroit since 1957.

That stat you quote is not accurate. The mayor of destroit has been lying to everyone about the population of destroit for many many years, so they could get more funds from the federal government, claiming destroit had a population over a million in 2000

That's not really true. There was a separate line between the private and public sector in Detroit. The city has nothing to do with the running of the labor unions in the auto industry since that was private sector. Any labor agreements forged between the auto workers union and the manufacturers were just that. The city had no legal right to bargain with the unions representing the auto workers nor the company. They might chime in with an opinion, but they had no legal standing when it came to contract talks.

Firstly, I laugh because you believe that I'm buying into the MSNBC non-sense in the first place. This isn't the work of a Republican, nor a Democrat, it's a systematic problem that's been festering for years. It's laughable to say one person or group did something more so over the other.

However, I provided a link to my stat, according to the US Census Bureau. Care to provide one of the Mayor of Detroit lying about the overall population? Of course the former mayor (Kwame Kilpatrick) was corrupt, but it doesn't mean everything was a lie.

Uh........are you even aware that most cars made in the US are now made in the Southeast? The Southeast has growing cities like Atlanta where they can't even keep up with the infrastructure needed because of the new people pouring in. In fact some of the best cities for economic development are in the Southeast precisely because of there more business friendly environment and lower tax rates, you know those Conservative policies that you claim are bad for the South.

The funny thing is that Mississippi is a dump but it has two advantages over Detroit.......it isn't nearly as bad as Detroit and it didn't have to spend $20 billion dollars that it didn't have to get itself in worse shape than Mississippi. Only liberals like you could actually manage to make a city worse by spending more money than they took in and yet still end up with half the streetlights not working and abandoned homes littered on every block.

In summary in case you aren't able to keep up with that. Conservative areas with pro business and low tax rates mean more economic activity and liberal areas with high tax rates and hostile business environment equals bankruptcy or at the very least massive debt problems and looming bankruptcy like Chicago and California cities.

    That "line" exists everywhere.

The UAW votes almost exclusively democrat

The city has been run by democrats since 1957.

The unions helped put and keep democrats in power the entire time.

The unions held car companies hostage, and demanded more and more until gm went bust... Chrysler actually went broke and got bailed out twice....

    - - - Updated - - -

Many states in the south are Right to Work states.

Michigan just made the switch to Right to Work, but its far far too late.

I think that I can shed some light on this kind of thinking.

You need only look to Europe and see what the left is saying about "austerity". Those morons really believe that it is austerity that is hurting the economy and if the governments would only spend the economies would be booming. What they fail to understand is that you cant spend money you don't have. The austerity is the result of running out of money.

In Detroit you can see them making the same argument. If the city only spent more money there would be no problem. Again they fail to see that there is no money.

That's not accurate; no one forced the company to agree to the unions proposals; all the company had to do was to reject the proposals, but they took the easy way out and didn't put the union to the test.

It was poor decisions by management and building a lousy product designed by non-union engineers; the unionized workforce was forced by contract to assemble the junk designed by the company. But if you are management, its always easier to blame your workforce as opposed to accepting responsibility for your own shortcomings.

Wow, you should get a show on MSNBC!

But until then, every other city in the country isn't bankrupt, and the ones that are heading that way are in hock because of unfunded liabilities to their pension and medical plans to their public service workers. Sure it's fun to blame the Chinese for self inflicted wounds, but if you're honest (which you can't be if you hope to get that MSNBC show!) you'll admit these cities did it to themselves.

Detroit wouldn't be going bankrupt if they hadn't spent so much damn money on Robocop.

If they admitted that Democrat party policies caused the demise of Detroit, they would be banned from public discourse. You see it all the time.......

    Capitalism.

The Democrats destroyed it though in the end though regulation, taxation, racial grievance politics, etc.

The UAW pursued a clever and effective strategy against the big three auto makers. Basically divide and conquer. They threaten one company with a strike at a time. The strike would cause the company to lose market share vs the others, so they would capitulate to the unions demands, in the belief that the union would eventually make the same demands to the other two and none would have a lasting cost advantage. Company managements didn't think people would want to drive those funny looking German cars or those tin Japanese cars. Their complicated management structures and internal politics made them much slower than the imports to improve quality and adjust to consumer desires. They ended up with a cost disadvantage an a slow to react management. The UAW was partially at fault, but the companies share the blame.
