It''s hard to gauge MTV's enormous impact over the decades. Did you watch it in the early 1980's? What were your favorite music videos from that period:

Nope. TBH I can't recall ever actually seeing a music video on MTV. I watched them on and off but it has mostly been white trash TV for as long as I can recall

Question: Did you watch it in the early 1980's

    But then we have

So he never watched them but he watched them. They have been white trash tv for as long as he can recall but he doesn't recall ever seeing one.

Okay, no deception here. Move along.

    Typical RW double talk.

What he said was that he can't recall having ever seen a music video on MTV, not that he never watched it. When was the last time you saw a music video on MTV?

My Dad unfortunately bought a huge cable package back in the 80s. I couldn't stop watching it. MTV, HBO and Showtime just had too much interesting content. It was literally one of the reasons I joined the Army and it was one of the reasons I avoided watching TV from 1983 until 2000. Of course I still watched a little TV, but never like I did from 80 to 83, until Covid, hahaha....

I think music videos did have significant impact in the 80s and 90s, but not so much after that. I had some nifty parachute pants in the 80s and in the 90s I caught some Pearl Jam videos that convinced me that I was styling wearing a pair of shorts over a pair of sweatpants. Well, the sweatpants didn't have pockets, so I considered it a comfortable and practical combo. The thing is, I'd not have thought about doing that without the Seattle scene "grunge" impact.

Although Michael Jackson was insane and a pedophile, I liked the Billie Jean music video, even though it seemed wholly disconnected from the lyrics. But that was not uncommon with many of them. Blinded by Science was pretty sweet. Money for Nothing was very cool in your face MTV. Thriller of course was epic. Wrapped Around Your Finger was kinda interesting. When Love Comes to Town, BB King and U2, man what a tune. MTV kicked ass

They showcased a lot of bands that wouldn't have otherwise had exposure. The Red Hot Chili Peppers for example received some airplay back in the mid 80s way before they established any of the significant success they went on to achieve.

I remember when they showed music videos. They don't now.

By the time I had cable TV, MTV was nothing but cringy proggy propaganda and elitist celebs showing off their mansions.

40??? MTV died for me when they went from music videos to their bizarro "reality" shows.
