I've long suspected this to be true, although I've gone thru phases of religiously taking my multivitamin every morning to throwing away half full bottles of expired horsepills. Even worked for one of those pyramid companies that sold vitamins and plant-based products and I never really believed any of that stuff worked either.

>>>MOD EDIT: INSULT<<<

HALF of all Americans!! Are we gullible or what?

I've been reading about this, and as far as I can tell these findings are limited. The studies showed no benefits for stroke, heart attack, or cancer.

However, some people suffer from plenty of allergies, preventing them from eating whole categories of foods. Testing shows I'm allergic to every tested grain, and also to such things as tomatos, nuts, milk, soy, eggs and other common ingredients. As a result, it's not practical for me to eat the balanced diet they recommend, which makes it hard to get certain vitamins and minerals. My diet is very restricted. So I think it's possible, and even likely, that certain multi-vitamins may supply stuff I need in less hazardous form.

On the other hand, I tend to agree that the supplement pill industry is mostly a scam. The fine print the FDA requires the manufacturers to put on the bottles all say words to the effect of "nothing in this product has been shown to have any effect on anything."

Yeah, I think if you're diagnosed with a deficiency, you might need vitamins. Otherwise your body can only store so much so if you're taking 1000 X the daily requirement of something, you're peeing 90% of it away.

I can see pregnant women might need more. Most everybody else probably doesn't need 'em.

Agreed that a balanced diet does meet all requirements BUT

If you drink you had better take thiamin or risk Wernicke's Encephalopathy

That study is flawed, of course a multivitamin won't help someone who already gets the necessary nutrients daily from their diet. However, how many get that?

With 60% of Americans Obese, obviously not many.

http://blog.chron.com/sciguy/2011/0...t-of-americans-think-they-eat-a-healthy-diet/

For those who do NOT eat a healthy balanced diet, a multivitamin would help tremendously.

According to this poll, 25% of Americans eat fast food daily.

Help what tremendously? Fast food has just as many vitamins and minerals as home cooked foods, depending on what you choose. More salt and fat, maybe, but the food value is the same.

Nobody suffers from scurvy or rickets anymore. Save your money and join a gym

And you know this because………..

It takes a LOT to get full blown scurvy and rickets is more commonly seen in those who have diminished sun exposure (it is vitamin D)

The study seems to only have reached a conclusion regarding multi-vitamins, not all vitamins and minerals. Doctors do prescribe vitamins to people, especially for things like iron and calcium issues.

No it's not. Fast food is highly processed, so much so that chemicals must be added to give it flavor. When I fix a hamburger at my house I use real beef, unprocessed. I use fresh veggies, not frozen. I use romaine lettuce, not iceberg, which is all be devoid of nutrients. I also use homegrown tomatoes. Good luck finding those at the golden arch.

I can promise you that a hamburger from Burger King is deficient in everything except fat and calories. Eating a salad would be much healthier.

Protein is protein. All red meats contain vit B. Breads contain whole grains, cheese contains calcium. Etc, etc.

Might not live up to YOUR expectations, but a person could survive on nothing but fast food.

People with vitamin deficiencies are the only ones who benefit from taking supplements. The rest of you 'believers' are just throwing your money away.

Sad, but true.

If you eat a good diet you don't need to take vitamins but if you are a junk food junkie it probably wouldn't hurt.

Might ease your conscious, not much else.

Then again, Subway is fast food, too. Healthiness depends on what you order.

Yes, especially those that believe in flawed studies by 'researchers' that say "case closed"... reminds me of the global warming "consensus."

Dick Durban has introduced legislation the past several years trying to get supplements approved by the FDA, likely in an effort to have them prescribed by doctors in order to obtain them. With the obamacare catastrophe taking place, more people will have to self medicate due to the rising cost and rationing of government controlled healthcare. The nanny state can't have you looking out for yourself, now can they.

If a person is getting all their daily recommended vitamins from their food, then there's no reason to take multivitamins.

Multivitamins could be useful if for whatever reason, a person isn't getting enough vitamins from their diet alone (I'm personally not big on fruit - ideally I should eat more fruit but I still find multivitamins useful to make sure I'm not missing anything)

Fast food is lacking in nutrients. To argue otherwise makes one look like an idiot.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/fast-foods-nutritional-value-still-needs-to-shape-up/

I advise you to stop trying to save face here and admit you were wrong. I have studies backing me up. You have.....well......your opinion. Whatever that's worth.

I don't even know if you understand what "nutritious" food is. If the food is cooked in trans fat, or unhealthy fats, if its got tons of salt and added chemicals, that's BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH. When I make my stuff at home, I don't use any of the unhealthy ingredients fast food chains use. For years, they cooked their fries in terrible fats. Now they use healthier fats and oils. At my house, I use only the best.

Nutrition at fast-food restaurants lacking

http://www.foodbusinessnews.net/art...={AB3A292D-0443-4FF1-A1A1-200BB39179B3}&cck=1

So no, it's not what I SAY, it's what the researchers in the study found. I know it might be a foreign concept, but I actually form my opinion based on facts and studies, not just "feel good" crap like you do.

No, actually it isn't

Really? Which one?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_meat

You are kidding me yes??

.

Hmmmm - but then people can survive all sorts of things - doesn't mean they will stay healthy
Not really - trouble is a lot of people are not aware of how deficient they may be

As always, you think people are too stupid to know what's best for them.

http://www.m.webmd.com/food-recipes...t-foods-15-best-bets-on-the-value-menu?page=1

A body benefits more from a grilled chicken sandwich and carton of milk than a handful of multi vitamins.

Fact.

The whole balanced diet and nutritional foods thing is a scam. My entire family basically lives off of cheese and meat with a tiny smattering of vegetables here and there (the proverbial Wisconsin diet) and we all live well into our 80s and with only a couple of exceptions are skinny at least by Wisconsin standards as we tend to have more than our share of hefers when compared to states like Washington which is primarily a seafood based diet. My grandpa also only took a couple of pills near the end of his life compared to the dozens of pills I saw other people have to take at the nursing home. I also get to keep my hair when I get old as well. As far as genetics go, I won the lottery big time. Cheese and bacon on top of my steak with a side of cheesy potatoes and a bloody mary. And that is just breakfast. I do take vitamins and drink V-8 although that is because I HATE cooked vegetables. The only time I eat vegetables is from those party trays where they are still raw and you can dip them.

At least we aren't as bad as the South though. Why the hell would you drown all your food in white gravy when you can drown it in melted cheese....nomnomnom! :knifefork:

My southern mom ate fried pork chops and cream gravy all her life, smoked til age 78, and was in good health until shortly before she died at age 89.

Genes can be a wonderous thing. ;)

Any researcher who says case closed is not much of a scientist.

GWDs (global warming deniers) are not much, either.

Perhaps if they were to stand where the terminus of a glacier was 50 years ago, and just think about it, they'd start to wonder if there is a reason.

Not saying that the Prius will solve this, of that Algore isnt a piece of dogsh**! not saying its all CO2, how would I know.

If things do start to get really bad, from a relatively sudden increase in world temperatures
will the GWDs refrain from looking for someone to blame? what do you think?

Oh, and on vitamins, its like the deal with a lot of other things. Lo here, and, lo there.
Coffee will kill you! Coffee will make you live longer!

Its like luck that way.

One of my dad's old friends came by the other day, He finally quit smoking and drinking.
He is diabetic with emphysema.

One can kind of supplement luck with some common sense, and few vitamins, dont you think so?

Diabetes & emphysema are excellent reasons to quit drinking & smoking. And if a Centrum Silver makes him think he feels better... by all means, he should go for it.

Excerpt from DON'T TAKE YOUR VITAMINS

read more: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/09/opinion/sunday/dont-take-your-vitamins.html?_r=0

On second thought, you should tell your dad's old friend not to take supplements containing beta-carotene and Vit E.

Why push his luck?

Have you? Not to completely derail the thread... but... the 'evidence' of glacier melt was proven to be falsified several years ago. AGW is a scam to promote wealth redistribution.

Not to derail the thread but no it was not. All that was proven was the research was not as solid as we would have liked

But back to the thread.....

ONE chicken sandwhich does not a healthy diet make just as one person smoking and eating bad food does not prove that millions have died early because of cigarettes
