Not sure how this is "America in 2021" considering the doctor was first charged in 2017.

This practice is against the law in 43 states, and an odd assortment of states where it is not...Wa, Mt, NM, Al, La, Il, Cn and Maine. I wonder if these are the states the doctor is going to, though some states make it illegal to go out of state to have it done.

I do like that they have now gone to the "lied to the FBI" to stop this woman from doing this to young girls. Not unlike using tax laws to go after gangsters

Obviously the countries who perform it, support it, while it is considered horrific by Western standards. It is more of a custom than a religious thing. Likewise in US male circumcision is very common, up to 92% (aka it is customary), while in Europe it is only around 20% and in North Europe, it is done only if there is a medical need for it. Of course the male version is far less intrusive then the female kind.

Christianity does not call for circumcision of any kind, while Judaism and Islam call for male circumcision.

if they banned the practice across the board until one was 18, I think it would be easier to enforce as then we could say, your religion can still do it, just not until 18

Yep. FGM has been carried out for nearly 2500 years,500 years before Christianity, over 1000 years before Islam. It is a cultural/traditional belief

 

I do not think the procedures are similar enough to compare them legally. FGM goes so much further than circumcision, to include surgically making the vagina smaller.

It has been pointed out that there is a vast difference between the results/damage from male and female circumcision. If a woman of legal age chooses to mutilate herself then hack away. Forcing this on a child should carry a stiff penalty.

 

Yes, the male variant is mostly harmless, although the pain to the baby is off the charts. Abraham is considered a superman for circumcising himself as an adult.
