Just call them Ismael - or Ismaela - or Ismaelum - as the case may be. :)

It's not even the subject matter which is the issue, that's the irony.

It's how they HANDLE it. IOW, very freaking badly.

You get my 5 star award for the week for that statement. It says it all. Well said. I don't even know what non-binary means so it would be pointless to use the term with me in the first place.

I'll ignore the Trump stuff, since he wasn't invited to my pity party :p

Meantime, it's not even about the idiocy of using a plural for an individual (that only works when you have zero knowledge of the individual - even visual knowledge), it's about the DEMANDING. It's incredibly bad behaviour for grown adults.

Exactly! It was quite evident that the person making the demand (not to use the non-binary's name) was enjoying a moment of high dudgeon, and wasn't going to let go of that moment to explain. It was very much a dictate. IOW I had to make what assumptions I could - effectively, that the person was determined to "train me up" in acceptable speech and thought.

Well that particular individual is gone, for sure. The others were, in their defence, clearly uncomfortable about the way it was handled - so their wokery is at least tempered enough to get through dinners without embarassing themselves.

The interesting thing is that the non-binary truly is - and always has been - a raging @sshole, but the 'partner' (the son of the rude parent in question) is actually a lovely kid. I feel bad for him.

If it were me, at that point, I would be pondering whether some friends are worth having...

No, there was no confusion. It was was very very clear. The recalcitrant parent chose that moment to educate the plebians (ie, me) in the ways of the woke narcissist. Decided that I needed the highest level of reeducation, because I'd attempted to subvert my obligation to use 'they', by using the name.

Names don't need that much attention. If someone is introduced to you (or introduces themselves) as Jonathon, that's what you call him. Asking if there are other options just makes Jonathon uncomfortable, and can itself actually come across as a kind of narcissistic obsequiousness. The majority of mentally healthy people don't want fuss made over forms of address, and will rarely even correct someone who mispronounces their name unless it's essential to do so. The goal is always to put those we encounter at ease - not to put ourselves at ease at the expense of those we encounter.

I fear that point is lost on quite a lot of people, however. That it's actually all down to plain old ugly narcissism.

That's all true, though I've personally found far more narcissists in creative fields than in science.

Which is an excellent framework for careful avoidance.

Avoid (at all costs) those who premise relationships on such peripherals.

The clarify, the use of singular 'they' is merely placeholder for when the identify of the person is unknown. So it's incorrect when the person is either known or seen (and thus a gender and/or a name is apparent).

And yes, you picked up on the other person's additional ****ery - the refusal to clarify the relationship asked about, on the pretense that that refusal was residual to the ex girlfriend's non-binary status. What you've identified is an adult milking an opportunity to demonstrate how woke the son is (and by extension, his parents), and further milking it by soapboxing the dogma to the rustics (me). And yes, using the name is the obvious solution ... but apparently that's no longer good enough. It's evidently seen as an evasion of duty.

If they are, it's their lot to adapt to a world which doesn't care one way or the other. Just as we all have to do at some point after the age of three.

    100%

The interesting thing about this situation was that it was a third person, acting out the narcissism on behalf of someone not in the room. It was a large step further than the usual limits to this kind of stuff. When you can get others to Nazi up for you, you've actually demonstrated that your dictates have some effect. Can you imagine what that does to an already very sick ego?

I know a few Trump supporters with this narcissistic characteristic you speak

I have known them all my life, good people, but it's like they joined a cult

I predict with time, they will return back to normal

For sure. It's just today's iteration of teenage misfit. There's one for every generation.

    how about ALL non-binary people go with zee/zer (he/her) zu/xim (she/him) zey/zem (they them)
Edit and correction, it could be even easier, since we don't have to worry about he/him/she/her because its on gender to them, then we just go with zer and zim and zey/zem
Edit (watching too much Joe Biden has seriously impaired my english), let me try this a 3rd time. HER/HIM (ZER) He/She (ZEE) THEY/THEM (ZEY/ZEM)
ok think i got it right this time
I know it sounds silly, but if it was universal and a NEW word and not using an OLD word (they) in a NEW way, i think it would be much easier for folks to swallow and remember.
If you refer to a singular person as THEY then it implies this:

    Fantastic!

My other Proggy friends would have got the joke, but this particular person would have had a silent conniption.

I am doubting that. I think that the relatively few who are arses about it are indeed getting worse and drawing even more attention to themselves, providing an illusion of whole being arses.

Only when the individual in question is UNKNOWN (ie, physically and/or via name).
