I've been thinking a lot about this issue on several fronts but there is one major issue with government ID is that its all fundamentally a matter of trust to get the ID. Let me explain it this way. Here is usually what is required for a REAL ID under the Federal Law. 1. A birth certificate. 2. A social security card. 3. One proof of residency backed up by another this usually means bank statements, bills, a government letter to an address, voter ID card etc. My real issue here is every last one is able to be forged and none is de facto proof you are you. Say Joe Mexicano wanted to get an ID and was here illegally he could just by the first two documents, use those with two computer forged documents anyone with modest skill could do say a rental agreement and a pay W-2 form I could do both myself. Then taking these you get a real ID even if the address is bogus. Another option get a fake Arizona drivers license from before the Real ID law, getting an address that could be real and use that they were issued to be good for effectively decades and mess up the bar code (normal wear and tear) odds are you could use that and fake it as long as it was not for Federal uses it wouldn't have the STAR on it. So its still all a matter of trust since there is no requirement or real checking on the base documents the ID itself really is never going to be secure and the penalties for forged ID and lying is not that high to deter an illegal immigrant or criminal. So what is the big deal of ID you are just as safe trusting the persons word in most cases and really most people will be trustworthy.

have you ever TRIED forging a modern driver's license? The level of difficulty is such that such an ID would cost you $1000 on the street, MINIMUM. Especially if the other stuff had to be forged, too. that would cut WAY DOWN on the fake voters, believe me. We dont need NATIONAL ID, we need the cops to be arresting people who vote without the state ID, along with the poll tenders who allow them to vote.
