20 years from now someone could throw out, Obama won some southern areas when he ran the first time and pretend it was because southerners were not racists, but it wont be true. Why ? Trump could care less about the middle class. That's why many as you said Rust Belt Republicans did not vote for either Hillary or Trump and left the Presidential vote open. Unfortunately, crossover Dems helped him win. Just wait until his Rich buddies get big tax cuts, and the middle class gets none or very little tax relief.

 

The economy is doing pretty well. Im thinking the bigger problem for dems will be convincing democrat voters why their failed policies will somehow not fail next time.

It was working class dems, in swing states that handed this election to Trump. Dems ignored them.
