Ah yes, but why did we leave?

No American infantry unit greater than company size was ever overrun in Vietnam. We could have remained. But we didn't -- that hardcore anti-Communist Richard Nixon finally got us out of Lyndon Johnson's war [like every other war America fought in the 20th Century, initiated by a Democrat] knowing full well it would mean a Communist victory. Why?

When 'the big fella', Michael Collins (the IRA leader, not the unfortunate man who had to stay in orbit while Aldrin and Armstrong walked on the moon) was negotiating with Winston Churchill in 1921 for Irish independence, Churchill warned him that he, Churchill, could put a soldier into Ireland for every Irish man, woman and child in the country. Collins replied with something like "Sure, and so you could. But you would have to keep them there forever." So Churchill let them leave. As we let the Vietnamese leave our orbit, and what happened? It's a little China, with a flourishing capitalist economy, although one with plenty of state intervention, like China's. In time it will become a democracy. In the meantime, it's a thorn in the side of China, which you probably would think is a good thing. And the younger generation love Americans.

All that money, and more importantly, all those lives, American and Vietnamese .... to prevent an Asian Tito. For nothing. I remember all the macho bluster, all the paronoid "if we don't stop 'em there we'll be fightin' 'em on the beaches of California!" etc etc ... (Hell, I'd hire the Vietnamese now to take over California on a franchise basis. There's no human excrement on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City.)

We have to be strong. But we also have to be smart.

 

The Germans were brilliant soldiers. In the 19th Century, they won all their wars. The British would have lost Waterloo if it weren't for the Prussians coming up at the last minute.

They had bad leaders who made stupid decisions. The first stupid decision being to go to war in the first place.

They would have won World War I if their leaders hadn't provoked Wilson into getting the Americans involved.

If Hitler had waited five years, or possibly even if he had not gratuitously declared war on the US after Pearl Harbor, they would have won World War II. (Churchill observed that one German soldier was worth three Allied soldiers.)

We definitely want the Germans on our side in the next war. No fair sitting it out while the rest of us go up in nuclear flames.

 

We are fighting them in California right now, not the NVA but the communists.

I'd love to have a lengthy conversation about what happened in Vietnam as it is a greatly misunderstood event but this thread is not the proper place for it.

The 'them' we're fighting in California (and the West Coast) -- not that there is any real resistance there, they've won in the big cities, which you can tell by how much excrement there is on the sidewalks -- are home-grown. Question: are you by any chance on Del's mailing list?

He is even more obsessively political than most of the obsessives here, and posts the best of what he discovers on the web to people on his mailing list, like me. You ought to be on it, and I can send you his email address if you like. A few years ago he and another vet, I think, wrote a pamphlet on Vietnam, I think with your view, trying to counter the anti-American propaganda that is put out in schools.
