Netflix has brought the original TV series back to life https://omegaunderground.com/2016/09/28/molly-parker-joins-toby-stephens-netflixs-lost-space-reboot/ I just watched the first episode. I give it a big thumb's up so far! It is a mostly serious take on the original idea, with much greater character depth and plot complexity. They don't try to carbon copy the original and instead take some interesting and pleasantly surprising turns. This looks quite promising. So far there are only ten episodes made but it looks like a sci fi hit to me.
I watched the first episode tonight as well. As a kid, that was one of my favorite shows and was looking forward to this reboot. So far, I agree with your thumbs up, with the caveat that I fully expected it to be quite different from the original, which it is, however the first episode had a serious one-survival-catastrophe after another. As soon as I hear that theme song, it's like I'm back in the third grade.
Meh, nobody can capture the true feeling of the original series cast with leftover Actors from the Vaudville era, and the droll antics of Jonathan Harris aka Doctor Smith, you just wanted to slug him in the jaw, when in moments of cowardice, try to hide behind little Will Robinson, / Bill Mummy, the music, the campy sets, the rug monsters seen in other Irwin Allen films and borrowed for Voyage to the bottom of the sea... Even Star Trek TOG borrowed a Monster, the mining rug Monster. When you appreciate the old Lost in Space series, any re-boot loses the contest. The old series had lots of heart, not much flash like todays films. I always appreciated the lost in space robot, honed to a better robot compared to the famous Robbie the Robot.
I do not have Netflix so I have not seen it. Try and remember this, since I lack any real information on the new Re-boot..... ************** "There’s no word who will be playing the villainous Dr. Smith, Gary Oldman played the character in the feature adaptation. Marshall is best known for directing some of the more action heavy episodes of Game of Thrones, so it’ll be interesting to see what level of science fiction action adventure we’ll be getting here." Comment from website...... ******************* The series is said to be launching sometime in 2018. However why change things as a comment said, Doctor Smith is now played as a female character and Judy Robinson is a step child ? "New Politically Correct "LOST IN SPACE" Series Coming To Netflix..Dr. Smith now to be played by a woman, and Judy Robinson turns black. Huh, What ? Will the robot have a gender identity crisis ?" End [/QUOTE] Disclaimer: the preceding comment was from the website and not my own.
No they haven’t. They bought the rights to the name and used it to generate attention for what is essentially an entirely new show (exactly as was done with the recent film). It’s an unfortunate trend, especially in sci-fi film and TV, that nothing gets made unless it has some kind of existing franchise or name to hook the marketing on to. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the concept for the show started out as something entirely new and it was retrofitted with the Lost In Space characters at a later point. It may be good, it may be bad but it’s not “Lost in Space”.
It's not bad, but as someone who watched the original series when it was original, the reboot is quite a bit different. I'll expand on that later, but the main similarity to the original show was the cliffhangers that had to be resolved every episode. In the new series, though, there was the "crisis of the minute" cliffhangers.
Sometimes reimaginings and reboots work, and sometimes they don't. In this case, I think it mostly worked. Of course because of modern demands for diversity, Judy had to be a child from Maureen's first marriage. That seems a stretch to me. In my opinion, they should have made either Dr Smith black or Don West. That would take care of diversity demands, but in the age of #metoo they decided to make Dr Smith a woman. So far, that's the main misfire of the show, Dr Smith. In the original show and movie, Dr Smith was a traitorous spy who devolved into a cowardly weakling. In this show, Dr Smith is just some sort of criminal and grifter. Far less interesting. A lost of the elements from this show seem to be borrowed not from the original but from an unsold pilot for the WB, including having the Jupiter 2 being ferried to Alpha Centauri by a larger interstellar vessel.
I will send you a Snarky Check that will match your Snarky comment and bounce higher than those high tech hard neoprene balls we had as children.
