Long Gun (rifle or shotgun) is the term used on ATF Form 4473. The other categories are Handgun or Other Firearm (Frame, receiver, etc.).

Had the rifle (long gun) been an "evil black military style assault weapon" it would have been noted and labeled as an AR-15 or an AR-type assault rifle. The anti gun media labeled the firearm as a "long gun" meaning they either didn't know what was used or that the word "long gun" may have sounded more ominous to the reporter. The word long gun generally means any long barreled firearm other than a hand gun. The word rifle is slightly more specific and would not include any type of shotgun. If the media knew it was an AR or AK type rifle, they would not hesitate to label it as such, especially in the anti gun state of New Jersey or in the proximity of the anti gun state of New York or worse NYC.

 

I wonder if maybe a public relations officer made the initial remark, and the media regurgitated what it heard.

 

I don't know. Since all AR, AK type rifles are banned in NJ, NY and CN, it's possible that the shooter used what was readily available, most conventional hunting rifles or shotguns other than high cap. semi-auto.

Definite possibility. Or possible that the LEO who conducted the press conference was "firearm literate" and didn't want to cause media hysterics by using the word AR or Assault Rifle for the most popular type of modern semi-auto sporting rifle in civilian use.
