A dozen grocery stores around the state have been forced to close for two weeks because of a public health order issued by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham at a time when the state’s residents are suffering from record high unemployment and food insecurity, critics say.

The order requires businesses with four or more rapid responses of COVID-19 cases reported within in a 14-day period to close for two weeks.

More than 25 essential businesses were shut down as of Monday afternoon, including a number of grocery stores and major retailers.

Insane. When in college I worked at a Grocery store. Many of the customers are not mobile and another store is too far for them to shop. This is nuts.

    Delivery.
I've been doing pickup. I don't think I will ever go to a grocery store again to walk the aisles.

NM is a largely poor state with a lot of small towns. Many only have one grocery.

Small towns are much more capable of containing covid than cities.

They still starve without food if the governor shuts down their only grocery two days before Thanksgiving.

Have you any sympathy for the poor? I checked on grocery delivery last spring. They charge a $10 tip to the driver.

I worried about seniors who are living on nothing but social security checks, not spending much on groceries, and were already just trying to keep their homes.

There are working-class people whose governors have shut them out of their income by closing their employer's business, and are months behind on rent now.

The Democrat Party has definitely become the party for elites.

Sounds drastic, but the article explains it. Makes sense to me. It has to do with staff.

The order requires businesses with four or more rapid responses of COVID-19 cases reported within in a 14-day period to close for two weeks.

I'm sure there's science behind the numbers, but when the staff at Albertson's catches covid, you don't want them comingling with the public.

The governor’s office issued a statement to KOB4 News TV, saying, “There is no community in the state of New Mexico where COVID-19 closures have closed off all food and water or medicine options for any community or group of people. Every single community where the virus is forcing closures has alternate stores, alternate resources. Moreover, stores are only ordered closed for the protection of public safety when the store's staff members have an abundance of COVID-19 infections among them – surely you and everyone in New Mexico can agree that not one of us would like to be shopping among staff that are contagious.”

We've had a few local news reports here and there with a handful of grocery store employees getting Covid. They announced the store location on the news....but they did not shut the grocery down.

    People have to eat.

What really sucks is wasting my time pushing a shopping cart through crowded aisles. Everyone isn't a shopper. I hate it. With a passion.

Yes, which is why all grocery stores haven't been closed. It was in my post.

I see this differently than most here. If you want to contain the virus, this is how you do it. I don't know why the shortage of tests, but hopefully the incoming administration can solve our production problem. Measures like these combined with testing and tracing is how we contain the virus. By closing these few stores for two weeks, NM is working toward insuring the state doesn't have to close hundreds of stores one month from now, nor overload the hospitals. It's a smart move.
