I predicted this in March. It took a little longer than I expected, but now it is finally happening. The free trade Republicans in Congress will regret the day they allowed Trump to do this. They could have stopped him, but they didn't and now Trump's liberal protectionist tariffs are causing havoc in our economy.

    Thank you, Mr. President.

GM’s bombshell news comes near the end of a year that has seen the auto industry occupy center stage in the Trump’s “America First” campaign to overhaul U.S. trade policy. Raw-material costs have soared as a result of Trump’s tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, with Ford saying it absorbed a $1 billion hit because of the president’s policies.

The new North American trade deal with Mexico and Canada includes sourcing requirements that will complicate industry supply chains, and the president also is considering imposing 25 percent tariffs on imported vehicles, a policy that would increase the cost of imported cars by an estimated $6,000 and eliminate 600,000 industry jobs, according to the American Automotive Policy Council.

And as much as the Republican tax cuts might have benefited the company, Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs have put a damper on the positive effects.

Trump was similarly upset back in June when Harley-Davidson announced it would move some of its production overseas in order to “maintain a viable business in Europe” in the face of Trump’s trade war, which has hit the automotive industry particularly hard. Later the same week, GM filed comments with the Department of Commerce arguing that Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum imports would weaken their ability to compete abroad and could result in “fewer jobs and lower wages,” both overseas and in America. “The over-broad and steep application of import tariffs on our trading partners risks isolating U.S. businesses like GM from the global market that helps to preserve and grow our strength here at home,” the company said. GM also curtailed its profit forecast as a result of the tariffs, as did Ford and Fiat Chrysler.

Expect more companies to announce layoffs as a consequence of Trump's liberal tariff policy. Things will begin to happen after the holidays. .

    I told you so.

You mistake what is popular with what is the proper course of action.

The opinion makers aren't always the best people to follow.
