You have to wonder, how many Russians have has the USA snatched up and imprisoned during all of this? I'm sure this is going both ways.

Naive was admitting she did it. She should have denied denied and claimed it was planted. At least then the CIA would have a good reason for extraction.
Once she claimed it was an accident, it was game over honestly. Because even here, in Texas they would have your A$$. That state is about as authoritarian as Russia an Florida.

Do you think that people in America should do 5 or 6 months jail for cannabis possession?

Or do you think that there are other reasons why she should be locked in a Russian prison?

She was caught with cannabis at the airport arriving into the country.
That isn't just simple possession, it implies trafficking it in into the country.

She didn't just have one cartridge but had five. That would imply to most people that there was a high chance she may have brought it into the country to try to sell it, to make a little extra money on the side to help pay some of her expenses.
(True, five cartridges is not a lot, but it's more than one would be expected to have for personal use for a short stay)

But still, like I said, being sentenced to 12 years for this is excessive. I personally think she should have only been sentenced to 5 or 6 months, and any more than 2 or 3, or maybe even 4 years would have been totally unreasonable and excessive.

True, Russia has harsh drug laws, but it also seems obvious the 12 year sentence was in part politically motivated.

    Is that a question?
Oh, it isn't a question. Thank you for the source.

Very disgusting, but not remotely surprising. The unrestrained glee of some conservatives says a great deal about them, none of it good.

But that's the thing. Nobody is disputing that she did something effing stupid and should have known better. Hell, I'm not even against her getting arrested. But since it's Russia(and since Russia wants to make an example out of her because of current events), she's getting punished to an extreme degree for a non-violent crime and people in this country are getting a kick out of it.

So yes, play stupid games and win stupid prizes may be in effect, but there's nothing about that saying that says YOU should be enjoying it. That speaks all about you, not her.

Prison should never be a good place. I would also speculate something....had she been a "patriotic American" as a pretty good athlete American public would be far ahead in supporting her. She doesn't have a lot of that. In fact, a lot of us feel "let the nations she loves go to bat for her"! If she had that support, I wonder if things might be a little different? Understanding, she DID break Russian law.

Not nearly as racist as today's US of A has become. White folks are guilty of crimes they didn't commit and are frowned upon by the left.

Celebrated? LOL. Never heard of her until this arrest in Russia.
So you made your opinion based on a few things read in media or seen on TV. Quotes likely taken out of context.
Never having met her or walked in her shoes.
    OK, to each their own

I really know nothing about her other than this situation. Have literally never watched a women's NBA game or a women's college hoops game for that matter. All that said, it would seem as if she knowingly tried to skirt the laws if reports she secreted it in her luggage are true. I mean if you thought it was okay, you wouldn't be trying to conceal it. Anyway, sucks for her. Just be mindful of the laws and customs searches when you are traveling abroad.

They should have. Maybe they did and she didn't listen?
Young people, myself was included, have to learn things the hard way, on their own.

Netflix or Amazon had a show a few years ago, I think it was called World's Toughest Prisons. A couple of Russian facilities were profiled, and it was striking how severe they were - and the ones they showed were prisons, not labor camps. I suspect the labor camps are pretty brutal.

Ever hear of the right to peacefully protest?
I take it you disagree with that freedom.

She wont be the first American to die in a communist prison. We have even had a couple of J6’ers die in Biden’s local Gitmo.
Foreigners love to enforce their laws on “cry-baby Americans”.
Nothing like Russians acting like Russians.

She has every right to protest. Her fellow citizens are just as entitled to disagree with her, and to express themselves just as openly as she does. I'd suggest you're hostile to the First Amendment, but unlike you I don't default to childish strawmen.

I had never heard of Griner until the arrest. I've never seen a WNBA game. Most Americans haven't. The WNBA has never turned a profit; without a sugar daddy like the NBA it wouldn't exist. I'm convinced this is Russian political theater, and the Russkies vastly overestimated Griner's celebrity/prominence. I hope she survives, she might be an interesting interview once she's released.

    I guess you could TRY and take her quotes out of context. Or are you just making excuses for a complete POS? Here's a few quotes to warm you up;

“I’m going to protest regardless,” she said. “I'm not going to be out there for the national anthem. If the league continues to want to play it, that's fine. It will be all season long, I'll not be out there. I feel like more are going to probably do the same thing. I can only speak for myself.”
This idiot won't play a ******* GAME because of the national anthem.

“Please do all you can to bring us home. I voted for the first time in 2020 and I voted for you. I believe in you. I still have so much good to do with my freedom that you can help restore."
This from a goofy twunt who tried to smuggle marijuana oil carts into a foreign country. She caused this, she's not a victim. I could post these all day.

    Disagree is fine.
Laughing at her situation in a Russian prison because they disagree, Low Class, IMO.

I see, another poster responded before you with the fact she protested racial injustice in America by not standing for NA.
BFD. It's a form of protest against an issue within the USA, not a protest against the entire country.

So, it seems you disagree with her and you never walked in her shoes. But you can judge some of her actions anyway.

She did pick the wrong country to not listen, is someone did give her advice.
