I earn 7 hours of vacation per paycheck with a maximum of 388 hours. Any vacation time I have beyond 388 on October 1st I lose; so, I take a vacation when I reach that many hours.

Vacation time accumulated can be applied toward an earlier retirement (388 hours is a little over 48 days). I'm planning ahead towards retirement; then I'll have all the leisure time I can stand.

I get 3 weeks vacation a year (I might get four next year), plus 5 sick days & 2 personal days...we also work Columbus Day, Presidents' Day, and MLK Day, and get those as "floating holidays". I can carry vacation (only) over to the first quarter of the next year (I carried 3 days this year), I get paid for unused sick & personal time...everything else has to be used or is lost. (I cashed out 4 sick days & both personal days last year...that was a nice check.)
