No, the La Palma volcano will not destroy the east coast.

This sort of hysteria is common with the media. The claim is that the erupting La Palma volcano in the Canary islands will cause the flank of the island to break off in an underwater landslide, creating a megatsunami that will sweep across the Atlantic.

Although Florida and the Caribbean would suffer the greatest destruction, with waves up to 164ft smashing their coastlines

It's based on a 2001 paper which makes several errors. The biggest is that it assumes the entire flank of the island, about 350 km^2, will drop as a single cohesive block. It won't. Past landslide events there have happened as a series of small slides, and there's no reason to think future slides will behave differently. The tsunami from that will threaten the Canary Islands, but not anything else.

Also, the wave simulation was wrong. Newer simulations say that, even if the worst-case situation occured and the whole block fell as one unit, the tsunami hitting Florida would be more like 10 feet high. Destructive, but not city-annihilating, especially since there would be a 5-hour warning. That wave height would get smaller as you go up the east coast.

    Reminds me of climate hysteria.
