The "moderate" wing of both parties have generally found common ground often enough to pass successful legislation together and maintain a solid base of acceptable governance over the span of our nation's history. There have been two periods when both moderation and compromise have broken down--the 1850s and the last decade. The first instance led to the Civil War. We're still determining where the current breakdown will lead.

When you say democrats have arrived, what do you mean? Democrats have arrived at what? Where? I'm missing your point.

Didn't you say they were trending left? Well, they (democrats) are there now, no more trending, they are left.

Your statement "they are left" is relative. Left of what? Yes, they are left of center. Yes, they have gradually drifted increasingly farther left of center over the past few years--largely as a response to the opposite force acting on the Republican side. Perhaps you're right. Perhaps they've arrived where they will ultimately stay. I don't know. I feel the Democratic Party is in flux, much as everything connected to America is at present. I'm not sure where it'll all come out. I would hope both political parties would revitalize their own center-line moderates, because they have the best record for working across the aisle for the benefit of the country. The more extreme we get, whether right or left, the more cooperation is abandoned and failure to govern dominates the landscape. Goldwater was wrong; Extremism in any form is always a vice.

I think the real problem we have is defining center. We all seem to think it's us.

I'm pretty much basing my feelings on the dismal performance of the last 15 years. I am so totally over the establishment. I voted for Trump this time, not because he's a conservative or a liberal, mainly because he is a business man.

In all honesty, I see him as more a self-serving con man than a successful business man. But I don't evaluate "success" as simply the amount of money one makes. There are other measures of success I find far more illuminating, and Trump does very poorly with those.

I picture Trump as the prostitute in the bible who is about to be stoned and Jesus stands in front of the crowd and holds up that rock and offers " whoever is without sin , come, cast the first stone". I am sure some of you on this forum are of impeccable character and would step up to the plate. The better bet, is, if your whole life was exposed you would be found wanting. Success is not how pious one has lived their life but one who has failed and picked themselves up.

if the Democrats are smart they will choose this guy if he wants the job=
"Sherrod Brown. Sherrod Campbell Brown (born November 9, 1952) is an American politician and author who is the senior United States Senator from Ohio, in office since January 3, 2007. Brown is a member of the Democratic Party."

of course the Democrats have not shown much in terms of smarts when they picked the Clinton Women as their candidate last year.

Tammy Duckworth would be a treat to trick Trump into making inappropriate comments and jokes about her not having any legs.

He will say things such as "her policies do not have a leg to stand on". or 'what walks like a Duck?".... or his best McCain like insult about her crashing in Iraq in her helicopter.."Like soldiers who do not get shot down and do not lose their legs"...

I agree. However, in the case of Trump, my main concern goes beyond his lack of moral fiber to his total lack of knowledge or experience regarding the duties and responsibilities of the Presidency--or overall, his complete ineptitude, and how that can damage us as a nation and a culture and a people.

Obama had a PhD in Constitutional Law and was a Law Professor at one of the top law colleges in the U.S. I don't think he qualifies for what you're suggesting. On the other hand even Trump's Secretary of State has accurately labeled Trump a "Moron." I agree with Tillerson.

How much of that was Affirmative Action and how much was merit?

Considering his dismal presidency, I have to believe he was a product of AA.
