Anyone from Oz know anything about the Red claw crayfish? The scientific name is Cherax quadricarnatus. I have just built two ponds and hope to start farming them come spring here in Alabama. I am wondering about the natural habitat the ph of the water, the water hardness, temperature extremes and if they will survive and thrive in green water or if they prefer clear water.

Anything anyone knows would be helpful....anything...Thanks.

If your business starts to do well, send me a ticket and I will come over and show you how to barbecue them and wash them down with a few ales.

Already do that. I chucked a kilo of live red claw in the dam about seven years ago and now they are all through the creeks. They don't seem to be too fussy about where they live. We had the dam and creeks dry out completely one year but when they filled again the red claw re-appeared. Bloody good eating!

I keep saying I will raise them in ponds but a better word would be tanks. I have two built (one not yet finished) but the one has already had our native bluegill and a few goldfish in it. They did fine although it took me a while to feed train the bluegill. I have since drained the tank and put the bluegill in my two Koi ponds.

The temps here in the winter get a little low to keep them exposed to the elements during the late winter and early spring. I am monitoring the temperature now to see how long I can keep them outside. I also plan to keep them in stock tanks during the winter in a greenhouse I plan to build.

our native crayfish are fine but they just don't grow fast enough. They also like to kill each other and burrow in the mud. They also do not get nearly as big.

Everybody here in Bama thinks I'm nuts...but I'm going to give it a go.

Dominor...if everything goes well we will have an Ale...either here or there...I have always wanted to see OZ...(everybody thinks I'm nut because of that also). Have an Ale now and wish me luck!...I'll have a beer!

Surprised they'd find you nuts for wanting to see OZ. (Apart from the current clown politicians) Tell them they're nuts.

If you're thinking to come, feel free to ask us stuff.
