    While Arthurian legend is not exactly an accurate documentation of historical events, it does go to show that the medieval European writers of these texts were familiar with African people (note that the text uses "Moorish" as synonymous with African). And this isn't even the earliest example of a pre-modern African presence in European history. For example, there were African citizens among the population of York during Roman times:
