all taxes are imposed/maintained by the threat of gov't guns and prisons. Govt should be restricted to whatever they can pay for by lotteries and voluntary payment for services (ie, enforcement of contracts) if a given service cannot be so funded, we should simply do without it, rather than employ coercion to pay for it.

I don't care about fairness as much as economic prosperity.

Life isn't fair, buttercup. But taxes created the world around you. You are kept safe by men in uniform, paid by tax dollars. You drive on roads to get to work, paid for by tax dollars. You cross bridges, paid for and maintained by tax dollars. You are ensured access to water and electricity, by a government funded by tax dollars. You have a safety net waiting underneath you, to catch you, for when/if life kicks you in the stomach and you need help, and yes that is paid for with tax dollars as well. Can taxes sometimes be excessive? Absolutely! We have a defense budget numbering in the multi-trillions. That's bound to take a hit on our wallets, and we should cease such foolish and frivolous spending. But that doesn't mean the baby needs to be tossed out with the bathwater, so to speak. Taxes have their place. If you don't like it, you aren't exactly being forced to live here and take advantage of the services they pay for..

statists all want to pretend that NOTHING can be done except by govt. Well LOTS of things are done by private interests, and a LOT more could be so done, except for the fact that govt thugs won't allow private industry to do it. Like deliver the mail (many times faster and cheaper) for instance. The fact is that many roads in the past were paid for by tolls paid by users, as righteously should be the case. The fact is that if we REALLY all want a given thing done, then a corporation can be formed, to spread the risk amongst millions of stockholders, who VOLUNTARILY pay for a thing to be accomplished. Govt never built a thing. Govt stole money from other people, to PAY other people to build things.

To some extent, taxes are inherently unfair, some more than others; an important reason for the government to try to keep the unfair taxes as low as possible.

But in recent times, the government has resorted to outright banning things it wants people to use less of. Better to use a high tax as a disincentive than a complete ban.
