Do you agree with the term "African American" to describe Americans based on their skin colour?

The term African-American came into popular usage to move away from distinctions of skin color to a description of cultural ancestry.

Considering that many immigrant communities such as Irish-American or Italian-American also used similar distinctions, it seems improper to deny certain people this kind of identity.

American is a national identity, while these hyphenated terms relate to family ancestry and history.

People can call themselves anything they want. Some prefer David. Others Dave. I can call him George if I want. So can you.

I always say black, never African American, and nobody cares.

You wouldn't be denying anyone anything. You are merely removing the racial qualifier. If you are a citizen of the United States, the official designation of your citizenry is American. It's literally written in the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America. I just don't see a Chinese, Irish, Italian American. I just see an American that has the same fundamental rights as I do.

True Americans gives the impression that they adhere to the US core values. They clearly don't. Frankly I prefer Black Americans, but liberals claim that such a distinction is racist. Most blacks do identify them selves as black, but the title pisses of liberals.

It’s not about citizenship, it’s about family history.

No spin needed, it was literally what was said:
“why don't they go back to the land of their ancestors”

Or they stay in the country they were born in and work to make it a better place.
Complaining about your place of birth's faults is the act af a true patriot.

It became that way, but it wasn’t the intention. Some people have trouble getting past identifying others by skin color.

Most white Americans know something about their heritage and in some ways it defines who we are. Most black Americans don't know much about their heritage except whatever comes down through their families. We all want to feel a part of something to belong. For blacks calling themselves African American is claiming their heritage and for the most part that is correct but without going to great expense they still don't really know where they came from. How sad.

A genetic search doesn't cost all that much and they can reconnect if they so desire.

A "better place" is very subjective.

Just based on what we have seen for a few months the culture seems to have come with them intact.
