    Uh Ho: Obama Says Vietnamese Dictator Inspired by Founding Fathers


    “...we discussed the fact that Ho Chi Minh was actually inspired by the U.S. Declaration of Independence and Constitution, and the words of Thomas Jefferson.”

    -- President Obama talking to reporters alongside Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang.

    It may come as some unwelcome news to the families of the nearly 60,000 Americans who died in the Vietnam War that the whole thing was just a misunderstanding.

    That was the impression President Obama gave on Thursday when he spoke to the press after his meeting with Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang. Sang brought Obama a copy of a letter sent to President Harry Truman from Ho Chi Minh in which the communist dictator spoke hopefully of cooperation with the United States.

    Obama, striking a wistful tone, observed that it may have taken 67 years, but the United States and Vietnam were finally enjoying the relationship that Ho once wrote of. After all, Obama said, Ho had been “inspired by the words of Thomas Jefferson.”

    The message here was that if only we might have bridged our differences then – if only Ho and Truman could have done what Obama and Sang did this week, so much unpleasantness might have been avoided.

    While Jefferson did get pretty fired up about “the blood of tyrants,” it’s hard to see how the Sage of Monticello inspired the murderous career of the Vietnamese dictator. Ho famously slaughtered his opponents, including the infamous butchery of peasant farmers who resisted his brutal taxation in the early days of Ho’s regime. Not particularly Jeffersonian.

    Estimates run as high as half-a-million killed in Ho’s effort to consolidate power after his communist forces drove the French out of Indochina. The killing of landlords and bourgeois-class merchants was famous even in its day and since then has been documented in even more horrifying detail.

    How was what he said wrong?

    If we would have support the Viet Minh during and after WW2 instead of throwing them under the bus of French colonialism, we probably wouldn't have had to fight in Vietnam.

    Well, first off we lost more than 10x the number of Americans in vietnam than we did in Iraq.

    And then theres that bit about communism being inspired by the US constitution, that makes me wonder if obama can get any dumber...

    Obviously, hes got you to believe such idiocy... and makes me seriously worry about the sad state of education in this country....

    We did support the Viet Minh during WW2.....they were under Japanese rule at the time not French. Perhaps you meant only after WW2...when the Vietcong were executing thousands of citizens?

    It's pretty hypocritical for GOPers to pretend outrage over this. Practically all their leaders were cowards and traitors who pulled strings to get out of the fighting. 60,000 real Americans died in Vietnam; the types that had others die in their place owe us 60,000 lives. Most of those who died there were only 20 years old.

    Can you explain to me how a communist murderer could be inspired by the US constitution, which guarenttees individual liberty?

    It's not a matter of being factually wrong - which he is - as much as it is a matter of comparing a mass murdering tyrant to our beloved Founding Fathers.

    If Ho Chi Minh had not become a butchering, murdering communist after WWII maybe he could have followed the example of Ghandi and achieved independence through peaceful means.

    Before Ho Chi Minh was a communist aligned with the Soviets, he was a nationalist fighting against oppression by a hostile European imperialist power.

    He was inspired by America's constitution, war of independence, and founding fathers. He didn't become aligned with Soviet communism until we told him to (*)(*)(*)(*) off and promised to help the French maintain their oppressive colonialism.

    The US and Truman (*)(*)(*)(*) on Ho Chi Minh. He admired America and the American way of life. He put his and his people's lives on the lines providing the Allied forces with INTEL we needed to combat the Japanese in that theater. We repaid his efforts and losses by handing his country back to the French.

    I can't help but wonder if he'd have embraced democracy if he had been given the chance to emulate America rather than sell his nation to the Communists in order to shake off the French yoke.

    Ho was a communist 20 years before WWII began.

    Just as the US and Stalin cooperated to defeat Hitler Ho worked with the US to defeat the Japanese.

    But that does not make him a democrat or a capitalist in any sense of the word.

    He collaborated with the French to liquidate millions of his own people who were Communists. Later, after the French decided to stay, he started his war against them. I'm not forgiving his tactics, but one man's guerrilla is another man's freedom fighter.
