My sister has been sorting through Dad's old, family photos, she sent me this one recently of me aged around 4 or 5 with her and the dog.
That's a carriage dog. Dalmatians were bred to trot along along side a carriage to ward off highwaymen.
Cool-- I didn't know that. I guess that has something to do with why fire stations chose them (at least, over on our side of the A.O.)? But I never really thought about why firemen-- firepersons, I mean-- would have a dog, other than for company, at the fire house (or house on the outside but really feel like a duplex, on the inside). Now, I'm thinking they sent the dogs in, to help drag people out(?) I don't know why I expect you to know everything about Dalmatian history-- though I won't be surprised, if you do. P.S.-- I was only joking about his looking funny, you know. For a horse, though...As if, you never tried to ride him.
They were sent in front of a horse drawn fire carriage to clear the way. Originally from Croatia where gypsies would use them for hunting and defence hence the affinity with horses. Egyptian pictographs contain images of white dogs with speckled coats. Egypt being the origin of Romany gypsies. They were also used by the Croats as war dogs. Ours was very friendly but he did chase cyclists and people on motorbikes.
Now, all that information does blow me away, a bit. Are going to say that you you didn't just look up, at least some of, those things? And, chasing motorcycles & cyclists, is less than definitive, in determining a Croatian War Dog ancestry; lots of dogs seem to do such things.
Funny thing is that (in the picture, at least) your sis could almost be slipped into my family's photo album and pass for my own sister, at that age (or even more so, for that sister's daughter, my niece, who was the spitting-image, in her youth, of what her mother had looked like, as a girl; I can still find myself unsure, looking at a picture, which doesn't give away its approximate decade, if it is a pic of my sister or my niece).
It's between 1970 and 1972. Can't be later than '72 because that's the year we moved to Germany and the dog as a puppy was my 4th birthday present which was in '69 and he's clearly fully grown in the pic. My guess would be 1971.
Well, if it's no later than 1972, then we can rest assured (since my sister was only 4 years old, at the time) that there had not been any secret, sister-sharing operation going on, affecting our two families. It feels good to have more clarity on that. Hey, you've been known to make the wise-ass comment, yourself, now & again. Speaking of which-- --- I have been thinking of complimenting you, since seeing that post, on what a "healthy eater," you must have been, to have been that size, by the age of just 4 or 5 (I thought it best to wait for what seemed the, "right time"). But you just said, in this post, that the Dalmatian pup was a present for your 4th b'day, in '69, and that you believed that this was 2, or possibly 3 years after that, which would have made you 6 or even 7, not, "around 4 or 5." So how can I truly trust your other info, about the supposed date of the photo? Just teasing, again-- though your facts about your personal history are, seriously, all over the place. Why don't we start with the age differential, between you & your sis. As I'd suggested, you look awfully big, to me, for 4 or 5; but your sister, though tall-- leading me to assume she was older than you--- still strikes me as rather young (say ninish?). Where does that get us? BTW, if we hadn't discovered this, before, we were born in the same year (me, in March).
As this is both an NFL thread, and a completely unrelated interesting topic I’d love to explore, might I suggest a new thread in casual chat?
Your wish is my command. However you now have a duty to contribute with a picture from your childhood if you have one. No nudes http://www.politicalforum.com/index.php?threads/childhood-photos.597009/
Why aren't the Bengals running the ball, anymore? They're up by 4pts., & in their last drive of the 3rd qtr, starting well in their own end, their series is 3 PASS PLAYS, and OUT? At this point, it looks like the game should be theirs, to lose.
Rams just shut down their offense, other than the 75 yard penalty aided TD. I had the same thought as you, just thought the Rams winning was inevitable
I thought it was largely boring, and a few too many shitty calls by the refs. Missing a blatant face mask hold is BS. Despite the refs best efforts, Rams won anyway.
Well, it certainly was not, "inevitable," but that's the way things happened. Of course, things would NOT have turned out that way, had the Bengals not shot themselves in the foot, with penalties, when they made their successful, and impressive, final goal line stand-- which became moot, & turned into the Rams' winning score. I know that penalties are part of football, so I'm not trying to play that, "but if..." game. I will point out, though, that the "holding," call, near the goal line, against the Bengal pass defender, was a LOUSY, rip-off of a call; nevertheless, I think that the prior, Bengal touchdown pass, was an actual penalty, that should have been called, but wasn't (though there was an argument to be made, in that case, that the receiver was just going for the ball, & that the contact was accidental, even if that's not how I would've ruled it). Still, it was a pretty enjoyable game to watch.
If the Rams weren't going to beat the spread, then they just should have just lost. Not beating the spread was LAME as it gets... Any team that lacks the pride to beat the spread deserves to lose... Rams are Super-Lame not beating the spread... Total Piece of Sheet...
You called it - pretty boring game. Unless you're a connoisseur of fine defense, of course. Cooper Kupp deserved the MVP award but I would have given it to Aaron Donald - he was awesome, as usual. Von Miller also had a nice game with 2 sacks. On the flip side the Bengals defensive front seven dominated the Rams' offensive line. Personally, I was glad to see Matthew Stafford finally get a chance to win a Super Bowl, and he probably punched his ticket into the Hall of Fame last night. Finally, I saw the pre-season picks for next year and the Chiefs are favored to win the 2023 Super Bowl.
I don't know what you thought of the half time show. It might had having to do with Black History Month and it was all hip hop that I could see.
Stafgird was ALREADY a Hall-of-Famer. Win or Lose (on Stats Alone). Winning the SB just increased his chances of going in on the 1st Ballot. True, Talon. That is hilarious. A team KC, that had 4 Straight Conf. Champ. Games (at Home) and only 1 SB Win to show for it? And, the last 2 Seasons, KC produced 2 of the most Prideless Disgraces in NFL History. Losing the SB Last Year as the Fave (with choke artist, Mahomes, having his worst day ever--when everything was on the line). Mahomes= $400 Million Bust. Choke artist. Then, heads into the 2021 Season as the Super Bowl Favorite, and proceeds to crap the bed in the AFC Champ. Game (blowing an 18-pt. Lead). That CAN'T Happen. Period! KC better do it next year. And, Mahomes better earn his pay. Or KC is going to be an even WORSE Disgrace to the NFL (than they were in 2020 and 2021)
