'OK' Hand Sign Is Now Considered a Symbol of Hate, According to Anti-Defamation League

The OK hand gesture, which was long used as a stamp of approval but has taken on new life as a mark of white supremacy in recent years, is among several new entries to the Anti-Defamation League’s database of hate symbols.

But in 2017, it took on a more sinister meaning after the internet message board 4chan spread a hoax claiming the gesture represented a “W” and a “P” for white power.

“At least some white supremacists seem to have abandoned the ironic or satiric intent behind the original trolling campaign and used the symbol as a sincere expression of white supremacy,” the ADL said.

I have no real position here, except this is SURE to set off many on here, so this is as least partially for my entertainment value...

Like all of us, I've used this hand gesture thousands of times in my life, all without indication of hate, and will continue to do so...

I'm not sure I can wait for the first person to go grab those pics of Hillary, Obama, and Biden going OK... Don't disappoint me!!

I think most people don't care what the ADL says. I know I don't. I'm still gonna use the "ok" sign, as will all other sane people. The ADL only hurt themselves with this nonsense.

 

I believe that the OK hand signal is also considered an insulting hand gesture in many European and other countries representing a specific hole located in the posterior of the human anatomy.

However, in the US it has traditionally meant simply "OK" and I doubt that another scolding edict from the selectively outraged ADL is going to change its use among most Americans nor should it.

 

I think that is far overreacting. To boot, in PA a person was convicted of making a gun gesture with his hand as an act of violence.

I mean, this hand gesture hasn't always been OK in all parts of the world. I'm pretty sure in some countries, it resembles a certain type of brown eye...which makes it all the more fitting that it also resembles white supremacists. Which means I'm OK with that. Furthermore, who actually makes this gesture anymore? It's too hard, a thumbs up is much easier.
