I saw that my favorite version of my favorite movie is now on You Tube. As I said in another post, the movie is Metropolis - Made in Germany in 1929 [I think it was made in 26 and released in 29]. It is recognized internationally as one of the great works in cinema. In fact I believe it is listed as one of the top 100 greatest works. It was way ahead of its time in many ways, not the least of which being it was the first time a robot was imagined. It is the story of the oppressed working masses below rising up against the elites who lived above in luxury. It is a science fiction movie. It is a love story. It is the story of a young man coming to terms with a reality hidden from most who sets out to change the world. And it is a story about coming together. When I first found it I probably watched it 30 times. So interesting! So charming... It also happened to be Hitler's favorite movie. This is the version released in the 80s by Giorgio Moroder. He put a modern soundtrack to the originally silent movie - great music that tells the story. I discovered this quite by accident and created a cult following at UCLA after showing it to a few friends. It is truly a masterpiece.
Much of the original movie was lost. Moroder restored as much as he could with what was known to exist. But a few years ago someone found an original copy of the film in an attic. So I believe the entire movie is now preserved. But Moroder's version is certainly worth watching. It is an absolutely wonderful work of art.
I LOVEMetropolis! The story is actually quite rich and although the acting is by today’s standards quite laughable (the hero looks like he is constantly being attacked by his own pants - best reason ever to ditch Jodhpurs) the baseline story was good and the sound track addition brilliant
It's a mix. It is laughable on one level but on another I find it quite touching. This scene is a great example. OMG I almost have to laugh but I love it. Oh crap, the site deletes my reference. Go to the 6:00 mark. Actually starting at the 5:20 mark is even better.
OMG so many great scenes. Hell, they're all great. And speaking of Hel... so many great lines, like Here lived Rotwang, the inventor, a man obsessed with the memory of a woman named Hel. Haha, wonderful! 33:00 through the end of the chase scene is probably my favorite part...if I had to pick....
