If they force mandatory paid maternity and sick leave the employers will just lower wages/salaries. In fact lowering wages/salaries for more benefits is a plus for the employers. Employers don’t pay labor burden (workman’s comp, unemployment taxes, matching Social Security, health insurance) on employee benefits.

I don't think the taxpayer is currently forcing that, and if a woman wants an abortion, I'm certainly not going to stand in the way.

So, no, the taxpayer shouldn't be on the hook for maternity leave. That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. Paying women to have babies? Get outa here! That is completely insane. The parents should bare the costs, not the taxpayer.

    I agree
We already kinda pay people to have babies though, numerous tax incentives.

And what comes next after paying the woman to have a baby? Oh, I know, taxpayer funded child care.

If you can't afford to have a child, don't have one. Do you seriously believe that I should pay for other people's maternity leave? And their child care. Really?

I'm perfectly fine with doing away with those incentives.

Half the citizens in this country are nothing but entitled, spoiled brats. They expect the taxpayer to fund practically everything in their lives.

Hell, why not have the taxpayer provide free marijuana, crack, meth, and heroin to everyone that wants it?

Cool. But trust me, SS is no panacea for me. I would have done 5 times better if the gov would have let me keep that SS money.

But let's not get off topic. SS will be there even if the taxpayer doesn't fund maternity leave. Or are you telling me that if the taxpayer doesn't fund maternity leave, that SS will fail?

The damn entitlement mentality simply amazes me. The greed just boggles my mind.

That's the point. Those babies are the taxpayers.

I get nearly 5 weeks of vacation/sick a year. It’s all in one big pot now so you use it how you wish. There is also maternity and paternity leave. 12 weeks for mother’s and 4 for fathers. This all depends on where you work of course.

Those babies will be born even if there is no taxpayer funded maternity leave.

Or are you saying that without paid maternity leave, many of those babies would be aborted?

Alternatively, are you saying that without maternity leave, many women will choose not to have babies? If that is the case, then those "mothers" shouldn't be having those babies anyway, because they don't truly want to be mothers. Example: Woman says "If I get paid medical leave, then I will have a baby. But if I don't get paid medical leave, I won't have a baby." Do you think a lot of women would think that way?

If an employer desires to give those things as compensation, more power to them.

But to expect the taxpayer to fund these things is ludicrous.

    Not necessarily

How many aborted babies would have been born if there was maternity leave?

To be fair we receive relatively little compared to other first world democracies.

Give it a decade - the number of entitled spoiled brats who expect a free living at the taxpayer trough is ever-expanding.

A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury...

It’s a nice quote — but in practice that doesn’t seem to be accurate.
Take our northern neighbor for example, they pay about what we do in taxes but receive much more and their policies do not seem to be centered around “more free stuff”.

Yes I do. Mothers and fathers take having children seriously, at least many of them do. Especially if it is a second or third child.

Not really the tax it is what your lifestyle is like. If you cannot get a living wage then it doesn’t matter if the tax is high or low
