"The Pentagon has buried an internal study that exposed $125 billion in administrative waste in its business operations amid fears Congress would use the findings as an excuse to slash the defense budget, according to interviews and confidential memos obtained by The Washington Post.

Pentagon leaders had requested the study to help make their enormous back-office bureaucracy more efficient and reinvest any savings in combat power. But after the project documented far more wasteful spending than expected, senior defense officials moved swiftly to kill it by discrediting and suppressing the results.

The report, issued in January 2015, identified “a clear path” for the Defense Department to save $125 billion over five years. The plan would not have required layoffs of civil servants or reductions in military personnel. Instead, it would have streamlined the bureaucracy through attrition and early retirements, curtailed high-priced contractors and made better use of information technology.

The study was produced last year by the Defense Business Board, a federal advisory panel of corporate executives, and consultants from McKinsey and Company. Based on reams of personnel and cost data, their report revealed for the first time that the Pentagon was spending almost a quarter of its $580 billion budget on overhead and core business operations such as accounting, human resources, logistics and property management."

    And the report..

Why i hate partisan politics as this has been gone on for years no matter who is in the White House... They keep us focused on petty things meanwhile things like this they try to bury.. So ask yourself why instead of CNN discussing a tweet for a week why are they not discussing issues like this?

Wait til Trump and Mad Dog Mattis take over the Pentagon. It's going to be different than the last eight years under Obama.

Will it be more like the 8 years under Bush or the 8 years under Reagan?

Oh, I agree with you - just leaving it here so you know, the truth that someone hid something during the 9/11 attacks is out there.

Looks like we all agree the Pentagon and Defense Dept. have been wasting billions of dollars under Obama's eight years as CIC. Why can't you give Trump and Gen. Mattis a chance before you start poo-pooing them?

That's my point. The problems with fraud, waste, and abuse at the DoD are endemic. They would require uprooting the entire structure and rebuilding it from the ground up to fix.

Hell, the government has spent billions just to try and get the military's personnel and accounting systems to be compatible and they can't even do that.

What shocks me is they actually paid for a study to see how they could lower waste and when it was done it was so bad they buried it. How can this happen? Thank god this came out. We the People need to hold these people accountable.

And to think, there are some people here whining about about the 2 million in private donations being spent on a recount.

How can they? Any attempt to do -anything- other then overfund the military has been met with stiff congressional resistance for years.

Like I pointed out - Rumsfeld hid billions of losses with 9/11. If they'll go to those lengths, who the (*)(*)(*)(*) knows what is really going on, and without the courage to change it, it will continue, regardless of who is in office.

    How?

Congress has proven to be unwilling, and that goes for the left and the right. No one does anything.

The waste continues and there's nothing anyone can do. For (*)(*)(*)(*)s sakes they concealed billions in losses by seizing on 9/11, which "conveniently" happened to destroy the part of the building housing the loss records.

    Un(*)(*)(*)(*)ing real.

CONGRESS were the ones who called for the DoD systems to be streamlined.

The DoD has failed to implement these reforms because they have so many legacy systems that can't communicate with each other and so many localized ways of doing things that aren't a compatible. And when you combine that with their hyper-conservative approach to problems like soldier finances, the whole thing breaks down.

(Note: I mean "hyper-conservative" in the non-political context)

So all waste in the DoD started with Obama?

The Pentagon waste continued unabated under Obama just like all the previous white male racist Presidents or did I miss something?

Quite the contrary. The DoD spent the better part of a decade trying and failing to streamline its systems at the cost of billions of dollars.

What do you think should be done? Are you willing to stand up and tell a couple hundred thousands military personnel and their families "Look, for bureaucratic reasons, we are taking your pay and personnel systems offline in order to upgrade them. You will be without pay or benefits for the next few weeks to few months."

    Would you do that?

You've apparently missed the concept that institutional ingrained problems aren't the fault of Obama.

I'm discussing the news item, not what the OP thinks the central issue of this is. CNN isn't the only MSM ignoring this issue. Partisan hacks from both sides are ignoring this too. Chill. With $8.5 Trillion Unaccounted for, Why Should Congress Increase the Defense Budget?

Yep its not just the DoD but they garner the most attention as they are probably the biggest waster. I would also love an independent study of the CIA on and off the books spending but that would never happen.
