Was doing some research and came across this and was shocked by the percentage of the US Black population who are convicted felons. https://news.uga.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Incarceration_Map-01.jpg The country either has too many laws or too many criminals. Perhaps it's a combination of both, and neither should be ignored. Many of these laws are drug laws and weapons laws (think about the type of areas where most of the African American population lives). Another part of it is some Black people being stopped or arrested by police for something rather minor, and then fighting back, which can turn into a felony. Also keep in mind there are more crimes in these areas, so there are also more police routinely patrolling these areas, so the chances of interacting with law enforcement over something rather small are much higher. I think once we take a look at this map, perhaps it can help us understand the dynamic going on behind the BLM movement much better.
Interesting read-- "...In the federal system, more than half of the black-white sentence dis-parity that is unexplained by the arrest offense and offenders’ prior traitscan be explained by initial charge decisions, particularly the prosecutors’decision to file charges that carry “mandatory minimum” sentences. Ce-teris paribus, they do so 65 percent more often against black defendants" https://repository.law.umich.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2413&context=articles In other words, Blacks are much more likely to get maximum charges and sentences for the same crimes as Whites.
Notice that, according to the map, Black people are most likely to become a convicted felon in the most Democrat-leaning states: California, Washington, Massachusetts. Georgia (not surprisingly) seems to stand out as the main exception of a conservative state where the rates are kind of high, but the rates in Illinois and New Mexico are similar to Georgia, according to the map. I thought the more progressive states were supposed to be "less racist" ??
I think much of this can be explained by the fact that blacks are significantly more likely to experience poverty and as a result have fewer opportunities to advance themselves in society. “Unfortunately, wealth in this country is unequally distributed by race—and particularly between white and black1 households.2 African American families have a fraction of the wealth of white families, leaving them more economically insecure and with far fewer opportunities for economic mobility. As this report documents, even after considering positive factors such as increased education levels, African Americans have less wealth than whites. Less wealth translates into fewer opportunities for upward mobility and is compounded by lower income levels and fewer chances to build wealth or pass accumulated wealth down to future generations.” https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/race/reports/2018/02/21/447051/systematic-inequality/
Um, do you care to explain exactly how poverty is connected to higher chances of becoming a convicted felon? I mean, one could imagine that not being able to pay for a good lawyer might have something to do with it. And if you're talking about committing theft, those rates indicated on the map are extremely high. (You're not suggesting a whole 1 out of 5 of them have been convicted of felony theft, are you?) So I doubt that could be the only explanation.
While poverty isn’t the only explanation for black incarceration rates it is a large factor. “Poverty's effects on crime can be explained through a variety of reasons. There is a higher rate of mental illness in the poor than in the rich (Brill 40). Poverty can lead to high levels of stress that in turn may lead individuals to commit theft, robbery, or other violent acts. Moreover, poverty may lead to an actual or perceived inferior education, which would cause youth to count on less access to quality schools, jobs, and role models, decreasing the opportunity costs of crime and increasing the probability of youth spending time on the street associating with gangs, etc (Ludwig 1). Crime offers a way in which impoverished people can obtain material goods that they cannot attain through legitimate means. Often threat or force can help them acquire even more goods, this induces them to commit violent acts such as robbery, which is the second most common violent crime. For many impoverished people, the prize that crime yields may outweigh the risk of being caught, especially given that their opportunity cost is lower than that of a wealthier person. Thus, poverty should increase crime rates.” http://economics.fundamentalfinance.com/povertycrime.php
It’s not all violent crime of course. Drug charges account for a large portion of arrests and convictions in the US. Now, are impoverished people more likely to suffer from substance use disorders? Seems like it. Poverty can increase a feeling of hopelessness. When trying to make ends meet, long-term goals like attending college, buying a home, or traveling can seem impossible. A feeling of lost hope or unreachable goals can increase the likelihood that a person will feel powerless and vulnerable to substance abuse. Lower self-esteem means higher risk of addiction. In a country that highly values financial success, having a low income can feel like failure and lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and low self-esteem. According to research, low self-esteem is linked to a higher risk of developing a substance use disorder. Low-income adults are likely to have less social support than their higher-income peers. When most of your time is focused on survival, you are less likely to have energy to be social or maintain a strong support system. Studies have even shown that lower income adults are less likely to be married or have a domestic partner. Friends and family can make a huge impact in helping a person cope with addiction. https://www.addictioncenter.com/addiction/low-income-americans/
agree, the war on drugs creates criminals where there was none, same as prohibition of alcohol did you take a nice family drinking wine with dinner, arrest them for nothing more then drinking wine with dinner, give them a criminal record, it's the gateway to crime for many and the ironic thing is, the abuse is there legal or not, just one makes criminals of those that did not abuse
How many Blacks are serial killers or guys who shoot up schools, churches, shopping centers, theaters, etc?
Why, I'm glad you asked! https://www.ranker.com/list/black-serial-killers/ranker-crime there goes a bunch. https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u....016/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-3.xls Oh, a lotta people won't like that data. Oh, this looks depressing. https://www.ncjrs.gov/ovc_archives/...rtwork/Fact_Sheets/2017NCVRW_Homicide_508.pdf At least Chicago is pretty safe, 75% of victims are black and 71% of offenders are...black. https://www.intellectualtakeout.org/blog/chicago-75-murdered-are-black-71-murderers-are-black/ That did NOT turn out as you expected I'm guessing.
Seriously? How many countries are run by blacks... Well, most places in Africa that are heavily populated by blacks are run by blacks. How many, I wonder, have the capability to use proper plumbing/electricity much less bear serious weapons required to kill millions of men and women and children? That would be none, the gov of south africa is the closest thing to an actual government. but for killing millions the somalis have done outstanding work. You should have thought this through.
Could it have something to do with the size of the states and cities and population distribution between urban and rural? Urban centres tend to be both more Democrat and have higher crime.
Rerun from Black Folks -Listen Up Fun with numbers! (I am not a great mathematician, so it will not hurt my feelings to be corrected) We have some on here that believe crime is race based, while I believe it is based on economics. There are around 330,000,000 Americans. 76% are white or 250m and 13% are black or 42m. Now given both white and black middle class and up are equally law abiding, so we have no need to include them in which race accounts for the most crime proportionally. What I am saying most crime is committed by those in or near poverty. The number of people "near" poverty is a soft number. Those "in" poverty is easier to define and a harder number but those "near" poverty should be proportionally the same black or white. 9% of whites live in poverty or 22.6m and 22% of blacks live in poverty or 9.4m. Per FBI '17 stats there were 8.1m arrests of which whites had 5.6m arrests and blacks 2.2m. The proportion of arrests by population: whites 2.5:1 and blacks 2.4:1 Almost the same proportion of arrests if you take economics into account, but blacks do cause slightly more crime. That can be explained by the black concentration of poverty in urban setting and many whites in poverty live in rural areas.
