Government "has to do something", because they are government and that is their justification for a job. Except, if they look at their job description (the Constitution), they should do as little as possible. Right now we pay $200B of interest on $14T, that is 1.4%. If we go to a historic rate of 6%, interest becomes $840B. A high interest rate of 16% (which is lower than the early 80's) puts every dollar the government collects into the debt.
Because they don't trust the public, they trust government. Somehow they don't understand that government with lots of power results in a high percentage of crooks. Adam Smith, in "Theory of Moral Sentiment" understood the good people overcome the normal percentage of crooks, and crooks keep other crooks in check, allowing the free market to work. But concentrate and coordinate crooks in government..... That is why small and powerless government is best.
