If you won a $590,000,000 Powerball jackpot, would you (*)(*)(*)(*) and moan about having to pay 37% in federal income tax?

Good question. No I personally wouldn't, given it took absolutely no skill or effort to get it. But I understand that some of my brethren would take a more extreme stance about money that IS yours.

Well, you DID pay $2 for the ticket. You paid your money and you tooks your chances just like any investor. And the money IS yours.

In many countries that have lotteries the tax is deducted at the time the ticket is purchased so that everyone who buys one is contributing to the government's coffers. The winnings are then deemed tax paid and all of it is received by the winner.

It probably could not work that way in the US as conservatives despise the idea of even one cert of their money ending up with the Treasury.

Agreed. No problem with it, but regardless I think you're a bit stingy if you're going to whine about taxes when you win that much $ lol

    Nope. Not me.

I'd pay the tax and laugh.

US conservatives, especially the wealthy ones, just don't understand the jackpots they've hit. My suggestion is they try striking it rich in Tanzania or Afghanistan.

LOL HERE WE GO. Very different - conservatives are much more apt to either a. work for or b. have the skills required to make their money, or both. What a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing joke lol

Of course. WTF did the government do for the money? Nothing. And all they will do is p!ss it away on wasted programs and slight of hand.

    Because it's a windfall I shouldn't care? Please.

All I'm saying is that if you possess all those great skills, you should be able to make money wherever you go. You don't require infrastructure, you got SKILLS, by golly. Put 'em to work in Tanzania. Make a fortune. Best of luck to you and your skills.

If illegal aliens can wander wherever they want in America I don't think there is any obligation by citizens to move overseas.

I would not mind it. I could live very comfortably on $371,700,000. The only problem I have is that most of that money would end up going into the pockets of lobbyists, corporate executives, and politicians.

Me too, all the way to the bank.

I don't have a problem paying taxes, the problem is what the Government DOES with it. Last year the Government $261 BILLION dollars in improper payments. In other words, they handed our the money WE paid in when it shouldn't have been. Are the employees that sloppily supervised? I drove and Armored Truck delivering money for a living for 20 years, one ooppss with a $25 dollar box of pennies and you were terminated. How do those clowns get to keep their jobs handing out $261 BILLION dollars that shouldn't have been?

On principle I can't abide by the government taking a greater cut of my money than someone else just because it's "not fair".

    Does it matter? Well -

With that amount of money? Hell no. But it's stillk wrong.

If one would turn their noses up at $371 large just because somebody else got some, they have serious envy problems.

Now if they came and wanted some of my $371 grand, I have a problem.

No way, that would be a tax deduction, the rate is 39%. 39% would be far too much. Don't forget the 15.3% of Soc Sec on the first 100k a year, plus state and local taxes.

No SS is taken out of lottery winnings. SS is out of working income only.

It isn't considered regular income? I thought gambling was subject to the self employment tax. Poker winnings are I am pretty sure. Hopefully I am wrong, I do plan to hit at some point. :)

What makes you think conservatives are against the idea of infrastructure? More generally, what makes you think conservatives (or even libertarians) are completely against taxation or the existence of government? They aren't anarchists ...

My bad. Conservatives like infrastructure. They just don't like paying for it.

I don't think you're gettin' it, Al. Everybody in America who has struck it rich has done so because the support system has been in place, whether it's the freeway system, the banking system or the tax system. If you disagree, try taking your 'skills' were those support systems are NOT in place. You will find out within 3 months that your skills don't mean dick. America makes millionaires, not the other way around. And it's way past time for the big money people recognize that fact rather than sniveling about taxes.

Of course it's not my goose laying golden eggs. If they want to kill their own goose, proceed.

Oh the irony. Consider where the government has to obtain all of it's resources (hint: the private sector). Governments DON'T produce anything.
