The not-so great escapes: Fascinating photographs document soldiers' failed attempts to break out from German prisoner of war camps

Series of black and white images from the First World War show secret tunnels exposed by German officers
The pictures also show prisoners after being recaptured and some of the digging tools that were confiscated
About 313,400 escapes bids were recorded In Germany during WW1 with some 67,565 of these succeeding

I must add that Lt Franz Von Werra had several failed escapes from British camps before finally escaping a Canadian camp and working his way back to Germany in 1941
