First of all, let's be clear: I think it would be a national tragedy, not just for Republicans, but for the country, if Republicans decide to make this a mock trial, and refuse to call all the witnesses and subpoena all the documents that are pertinent. Or if in any way they decide to ignore the evidence and just rubber-stamp a "not guilty" verdict regardless of any consideration. It would undermine our Constitution and render oversight useless ... maybe forever. And that is not good for either party.

That is, above all, my position. But what happens if Republicans do ignore everything? If they stop evidence from being shown or just render a non guilty verdict despite the evidence.

How would that affect in November?

    If Trump is NOT removed

I see benefits and shortcomings for both sides. Of course, Trump will brag about having been declared not guilty. But if the evidence was shown, that would draw more attention to it. And if it's not, it will draw attention to the fact that Republicans did everything to hide it. That point would be beneficial to Democrats.

However, Trump will have received a green light by the Senate to cheat in the elections. We need to remember that he started his illegal campaign activities two days after he was convinced that Mueller would not testify against him. So it's a safe bet that two days after the Senate renders a non-guilty verdict, he will again feel comfortable enough to continue cheating again. October surprises will abound. He could very well cheat his way into getting himself reelected

    If Trump IS removed

I see more political benefits for Republicans. I doubt very much that Pence will run on his own. He might even be impeached himself. Most likely somebody else will run. Nikki Haley comes to mind. But I doubt Nikki will pull off the election schemes that Trump has prepared. Her attachment to then impeached-and-removed (and maybe criminally indicted) Donald Trump will be highlighted. She most likely will distance herself from White Supremacists, who had a heavy hand in electing Trump. Putting all those things aside, she may not be a better President than Trump, but she would definitely be a better candidate.

Yet, still no evidence. The investigation is over. It is not the job of the Senate to have a do-over for the House. The House presents their lack of evidence and the Senate votes on it.

What makes a mock trial. The judge and the jury listen to the evidence presented by the prosecution (read House) and by the defense (read the administration) and decide the outcome. If the House does not provide any credible or probative evidence -- which they won't because they have none-- the court (read Senate) will decide accordingly and appropriately and send the prosecutors packing. What is mock about that? As has been pointed out numerous times the court never calls their own witnesses. It certainly does not call witnesses because the prosecutors comes hat in hand and asks for the court to call witnesses that they don't have but feel (hope) they might help their pitiful cause. In an impeachment trial the court (Senate) can call witnesses if they think it would clarify the evidence that has already been presented.

Get the hell off this mock rubber stamp trial crap. What if the Senate called the witnesses that the House wants and those witnesses blow the House's case to smithereens. Wanna bet against instant accusations of perjury?

Ad nauseam questions. Some people do far too much thinking. Put down the keyboard, the election os Nov 3, 2020. Have a beer and get out and vote your preference come Nov. or if you live in a leftie State, go vote today and then go back as often as you can.

You confuse three different things. "Having no evidence", "having enough evidence", and "having all the evidence".

If we have all the evidence, and jurors believe that it does not prove their case, then it's a fair trial.

But if the accused is allowed to pick and choose which evidence against them is presented, then it's not.

That's what Republicans need to do. If they don't do everything in their power to allow all the evidence to be presented, and Trump is found not guilty, you will be hearing about this "rubber stamp trial crap" to your last dying day. And your children and grandchildren will read about it in history books.

Exactly! I don't know about perjury. But that would be a definite win for Trump. Not only a win in this trial. A win in the elections, and a win in History books.

If he's innocent, why doesn't he do that?

I'm curious: do you believe he's innocent? In other words, if all those witnesses and documents were presented, would they demonstrate that Congress has no case?

You lost me in the first sentence with “mock trial”.

The Dems already turned this into a joke. This dying beast can’t be saved. Mitch needs to end it soon. A one party impeachment with no underlying crime is what our founders feared the most.

Obviously Trump is going to be re-elected. The best that can happen for Dems is that the Party will not lose the House to Republicans as punishment for this bogus and utterly politically partisan impeachment. Best . . . case . . . scenario.

Precisely. First they crafted non impeachable offenses as impeachable and THEN they tried to find ANYTHING that might possibly stick to the wall after the fact. But you are supposed to narrow down the crime and gain evidence for it, however, before issuing an impeachment in the first place.

Democrat House conducts "mock trial" - rationalize as in the nation's best interest
GOP Senate conducts "mock trial" - rationalize as national tragedy

    OK

I don't think there are a lot of undecided American voters, so I don't think an acquittal will make a bit of difference in November.

There's just too many possibilities out there to know what will happen at this point in time.

Trump has the capability of producing more and crazier BS every single day.

The House managers are free to provide all the evidence they have and neither the defense nor the Senate can do a single thing to stop them. (Unlike the House I might add.) However neither the defense nor the Senate are obligated to present any other evidence that the House wishes they had.

Once again you demonstrate that as a lawyer and an investigator you'd make a first rate cabbage picker. No one ever has all the evidence. One opts to go to trial with what one has and hopes for the best. It is not up to the court or the Jury to do your investigation for you, or the defendant for that matter. IN this case the house brought two of the weakest and lamest charges any jury has ever scene and are begging the senate for a do over of it's incompetence. Sorry that's not how trial work nor impeachments for that matter.

Oh and no I don't think Trump is innocent, the last innocent man was crucified a little less than 2000 years ago mostly for making the rest of us look bad. That being said I don't believe what he is charged with in the AOI is a crime let alone an impeachable offense.

Politically, the best scenario for the Democrats is some circumstance in which Trump is removed. Otherwise this entire impeachment farce won't even be remembered in November. Pence would then probably run, but seems unlikely to be able to weather the 24/7 Emmanual Goldstein-like attack he would be subject to. I remember how he crumbled under an interview with George Stephanopoulos a few years ago as governor. I don't think this guy could hack it. So after the GOP loses the 2020 race, I assume the Democrats will make sure no Republican wins the Presidency again.

They are not. They have strong evidence, for example, that Bolton will clarify to senators whether Trump had a "drug deal" or not and the Senate may not allow them to present it.

    So you missed again....

The purpose of the House managers is, first and foremost, to serve the country. Not to remove Trump. If they have evidence that will acquit Trump, they are obligated by their oath of office to present it. And if they have evidence that they are not sure either way, they are obligated to present it.

You seem to believe that this is a fight between Democrats and Republicans. It is not! It's a fight between constitutionality and lawlessness. Between a dictatorship and a Republic.

    What side are you on?

And you didn't answer my previous question: do you believe Trump is guilty?

What in hell are you talking about? If the House managers have evidence they can present it, and as I said there is nothing the Defense or the Senate can do to stop them. Of if they don't have evidence they cannot preset it. DUH!!! It ain't rocket science! If they don't have evidence but want the Senate to provide it for them, that is known in the vernacular as tough tit_ie. If Bolton has evidence that the House would like to present then they should present it. They should not cry in their spilled milk that they couldn't get it and expect anybody else to pick their sorry asses out of the ditch.

Surely you joke. Why did the House start talking impeachment in early 2017? Because they had irrefutable evidence? Being pissed off for losing is a million miles from any evidence. They had nothing but dreams and hate for losing the election. Your attempt to present the gladiators at the gate as knights on white horses is laughable at best. If the House has no proof either way they have no constitutional basis for writing Articles of Impeachment.

Trump is guilty of nothing, not even a traffic ticket. (OOPS! I might have give the House impeachment reason number 37......)
