So you don’t think anything in your country’s past is something to be proud over? You know you can denounce the bad and celebrate the good, right?
I was born in a place some call the UK. That was an accident of birth not an entitlement to ownership of that place, why would it be?
Ok, well, the place you were accidentally born in has many aspects in its history that the world can be proud of. Is that better?
I feel proud (and ashamed) of many aspects of planetary achievements from all over the place. I also feel patriotism and nationalism are evil impulses. The contretemps over American sports people taking or not taking the knee during the Star Spangled Banner seems to me to be a meaningless and vapid controversy. I can't understand why it matters, it's a song that's the long and the short of it. The meaning some of the singers choose to invest in that song is individual to them, yet it is dressed up as in some way important when I see it as rather creepy and threatening. That goes for all national anthems by the way.
youre very prideful. its nothing but vain glory and a deadly sin btw, not that id expect a Pagan to understand.
So you look down on non-christians? You'd fit right in with the colonialists and conquistadors. There is nothing wrong with being proud of one's homeland.
I agree with some of what you say. Do you feel pride for any things that occurred within the borders of the UK? I feel pride in things accomplished from other parts of the world as well, but see nothing wrong with being proud of the accomplishments of ones own country. Hell, I'm from the USA, and I'm proud of a lot of things the Brits accomplished throughout their history. I could say the same about other parts of the world. We are all human after all. But I love hearing patriotic songs from various parts of the world. They tell a story of the struggles and victories of those people. I love that, even if they were enemies of my country at the time those songs were written. But I'm a huge history buff, so that might have something to do with it.
Says who? The god of the religion I don't adhere to? How does that affect me? I think the bible has some wisdom in it, as do the rest of the world's religions, and I think Jesus was a great man, but I think christianity and the other major religions in the world are tools men use to gain and maintain power. There is nothing wrong with having pride in one's self or one's nation. saying "pride is a sin" sounds like a great line to keep the peasants in line.
The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. do you know who said that?
Jesus. why? I already told you I think he is a great man, but I am not Christian. And besides, I think it is very easy to take great pride in yourself and still act humble. The two are not exclusive.
pride is self exaltation, meaning self accomplishment. what did you do to make britain great? nothing!
I'll say again: I think it is very easy to take great pride in yourself and still act humble. The two are not exclusive. You can be proud and humble at the same time. Pride is not "exalting yourself". You just love attacking people who don't adhere to your religious beliefs, don't you? Seems like you are the one "exalting" here, trying to show how your religion is greater than all others. Again, you would fit in great with inquisitors, or colonial priests showing the natives the error of their ways.
So you have never felt proud of a friend that accomplished something great that you had nothing to do with? I think you are adhering to a very specific and narrow definition of the word. And making a big deal over some silly stuff.
