The Democrats have been in charge of 2/3rds of the Government for the last 5 years, one would think after that amount of time the poverty rate would be dropping dramatically, not in a holding pattern. After all the compassionate Liberals would see to it there was social justice for the poor, right? I mean Obama was going to make those wealthy pigs pay and the poor would be so much better off, right?

Did Obama make them pay? I do know Obama made GE's CEO Jeffry Immelt his jobs czar.

GE announces plans for first wind turbine plant in India

The guy plans to build wind turbine in India in 2009 and Obama makes him his jobs czar? Any wonder why we have 50 million living in poverty?

Gettin' more expensive to be poor...
    :omg:
Poverty in America More Hopeless and More Comfortable Than Ever
May 07, 2014 — What does it mean in America to be poor? Annie Lowrey of the New York Times has an insightful new article that takes apart the question of how costs of living in America has changed over the past nine years. Her result: as toys and luxury prices have plummeted, the important things like food, education and health care have only gotten more expensive.

None at all, when you people excuse corporations that don't pay a living wage and result in more people needing welfare to keep from starving.
And if some con had been potus during the past 5 years, the figure would likely be double by now.
The last thing that you people care about is the poor.

Employers pay what the worker is worth.

People with valuable skills are paid more than a common worker in a free market oversupplied with common workers.

Capitalism does not cause so many obama voters to drop out of school and wander around our streets with no skills.

Useful to who? even with a proper education the best you can do is earn a living while your master is making millions , you don't understand how demotivating this is ?
Not to mention that you have to go in debt to study (probably something you don't like) and then even more in debt to start your own business or that you will still have to pay taxes in order to finance the subsidies of megacorporations .
This may explain why people turn to crime , 19th century revolutionaries here fought under the banner "better a day as a free man than 40 years of slavery" , the modern equivalent is "rather a week as a criminal and live like i want than 30 years of 9-5 (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)" .

Those are the ill effects of capitalism : you don't work for yourself , you don't live for yourself , you are a bill paying / new worker breeding / master pleasing machine programmed to worship non existing gods while all those who exploit you laugh at your face though a TV screen.

Its not necessary for everyone to have exactly as much.

    Thats a fools dream.

In a capitalist economy people with skills can live comfortably on much less than what the top 1% have.

This sounds like the "American dream" degraded , give it some time to see how this comfort evolves.
76% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and 1/6 are in poverty, it looks like your skills equal those of nomads in Mauritania .

Liberals have been ruining the US economy and standard of living in America since clinton was president.

The left in this country has forgotten what the American Dream is.

It doesn't matter whether Democrats succeed or fail. What matters is that they tried, and meanie Republicans wouldn't let them make life better for Americans. And all because Obama is black.

republicans still trying to scare people into not spending... part of the economic recovery depends on people spending... and republicans know this

the other part is increasing job opportunities by increasing the cost of foreign outsourcing and foreign imports

It would seem most Liberals just want to add to that poverty level by making millions of illegals citizens and not even try and fix our illegal problem. They have to know at least 3/4 of them will wind up on the welfare rolls and get thousands back from the IRS on April 15, taking billions more tax dollars from America's poor. But you have so many that just don't care. They are going to back their Party's decision on this no matter how much it hurts the country. More votes is the only thing that counts.

    Society.

Fine by me. I'm not rich by any stretch but I can pay my bills, take vacations, buy some nice things, and save a little for the future. I wouldn't want the kind of life my boss has, but I'm glad he is driven in the way that he is because it is currently keeping 40 of us from being jobless.

Only to someone bent on jealousy and greed.

So lower taxes on people who start their own business and get Government out of school lending so prices can go back to where they used to be. It's hilarious how you on the left complain about the effects of leftism and you don't even realize how it's involved.

Those kinds of people should be put in jail. If you're more willing to become a criminal than you are to work and be a productive member of society, society doesn't need you causing problems.

You can work and live for yourself. Millions of people in this country do. Why don't you give it a try?

15% poverty has been about the trendline since the late 1960's, and it has been that way through democratic and republican presidencies; booms and busts. Basically this report is that things are pretty much the same old same old.

Yes, life is hard. But this generation has it easier than any generation down through history. A hundred and fifty years ago, there were few jobs. Most people lived on small farms and worked from daylight till dawn just to grow enough to feed their family and sell a little to buy vital necessities. They lived by candlelight and carried their water from a nearby creek. No televisions, radios. No movies, bowling or etc. But who are the big cry babies? Who wants government to fill most of their needs? Who gets upset if you talk about working for your welfare? They had the very rich back then but I doubt many said lets take from them and give it to us. They were proud people that in most cercomstances would rather die than take charity. Where is that can do spirit today? It died.

There is no such thing as a living wage.

    Really, there isn't...

That's cronyism capitalism. Capitalism was what we had after WWII, when competition, and small businesses ruled without so much government interference to assure the too large to fail crowd had all the benefits the best government corporate money can buy provides.

You are both correct to a point. People are not responsible for themselves any more and they were trained by the best government corporate money can buy to be that way, and there is no incentive to not become government dependents so the 'too large to fail' crowd, own the monopoly on every major industry, and the government that allows it to be that way.

Now if you will just face the reality of the situation, come to the conclusion that things are the way they are because of a bought and paid for two party scam, that is dividing and conquering the nation as the plutocracy dictates, and if we start today crippling the plutocracy and it's power in a decade or so things will start to actually show some results of real change.

One thing is completely clear, keep voting for the lesser of two evils, and things are only going to get worse.
