Are you aware that Jefferson was on the liberal side of things? In the beginning of the United States the two parties were the Federalist that included people like Hamilton, Adams, and Jay and was the more conservative party - believing the rich and well born should rule. The more liberal party was the Democratic Republicans better known as the Jeffersonians and included Jefferson, Madison, and Franklin.

Take a look at the biographies of all the great innovators, people like Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk all tend to lean liberal. Before liberalism there was no freedom. Just kings and priests telling everyone else what to do and what to think.
