Is it vile? I can't even imagine what it looks like .. or what texture it is.

I can only extend to canned fish, myself (and I now have a LOT of that in the shed!). Land based proteins and cans don't mix successfully, IMO. You have to do really weird stuff to meat to get it cannable. Pulverised, tons of sodium, jellies, etc.

I want to build a home soon and emergency plans will be considered. Emergency circuits for cooking, refrigeration, and emergency only lighting will be labeled so that all other's can be shut off during generator or solar/battery operation. I have a wood burning stove to install on the patio for outdoor cooking. If I do my own utilities, I'll have a water storage tank and a cistern for roof water collection. I'm not there yet, but I'm planning.

Right, sorry .. of course. We have a little diesel jobby as back up. Couldn't tell you what it is, though. I leave that sort of detail to them who're interested. IOW, not the girls in the house :p

Great ideas. It takes time to get it all together. Very difficult (and very expensive!) to do it all at once.

If you can secure your water and have a way to produce food, you can survive quite a lot. Those are the not negotiables - water and food. Electricity is great, but isn't crucial. Having a means of cooking and heating is also pretty important. You definitely need a wood fuelled range of some sort. I would try to get one with an oven and a water jacket for water heating - because you'll want a hot shower! They're not cheap new, but plenty of old ones for sale for around $1000. We have an old one and it's fantastic. Heats the entire house, and pumps out plenty of residual heat long after last log added. The massive fire bricks plus the heavy cast iron body means it stays warm for 8-12 hours. Very efficient.

We have a low wage service sector economy because globalism caused that. And generations that will never own much of anything

This aint rocket science what caused the disemboweling of America and the war on our middle and working people so stop playing dumb.

Some very smart people are saying this is an engineered weapon that got out into the population in china. And since it is related to sars there will be no vaccine. Lot a proper bio weapon . Also people can carry it without getting sick ensuring max spread. If bio engineered it will have 3 waves going around the globe.

Download the army manual on bio weapons to understand how they work and how bad they are.

This one meets all of the criteria for a bio weapon .

I trust the man who is saying this.

This one will destroy the supply chain in china . Use your educatiob to drduct what that means .

This one aint going away folks.

The secobd wave will infect the young after the first one takes out old folks like me.

Buy dried beans rice and water before the panic. Water and bleach. And hope you are not on life sustaining meds .

    Good luck!

If you are on life sustaining meds I’d suggest building up at least a couple month surplus regardless of what happens with COVID-19.

They all work differently. Some are flanges, some run the water through pipes around your flue, some are tanks. Water jacket is just the colloquial name for any water heating device retro fitted to a wood burner. If you want the continuous type, you probably need to check various flow rates. It's not going to be fast and powerful like instant gas, or even electrically heated .. but it works. If you preserve it for bathing only (don't be tempted to use it for cups of tea or washing dishes!), you'll be fine. Assuming there aren't ten of you :p

Oh well, if that happens (which probably won't), then oh well.

There's nothing to be done other than what can be done.

Things to be done - researching the virus (being done), restricting travel/contact ( somewhat being done), be sanitarty (are you doing it?, if not, do it now).

    Other than that, relax.

But... people can prep all they want, little do they know they're just gathering supplies for me if **** actually hits the fan. :D

Or... you could just calm down and not worry about things that you have no control over. Or not, it's your call.

I was just curious about capacity as a heat sink/storage for residual heat after fire is out. I’ve considered building something that would pre heat water before going to electric tank water heater but I’m too lazy I guess. Because I have to have a good sized generator to pump stock water during outages I’ve never felt like putting effort into going completely non electric for emergencies.

Except for a few years while getting “educated” I’ve heated 100% with wood. Can’t live without it. Never had a range though. It sound great.

In Post #80 you wrote: "I have five people and two dogs here - a cup o noodles ain't going to feed us for two weeks."

So, if you see a potential disaster in front of you it is a good idea to plan on how you will handle it before it smacks you upside the head. If you have five hungry people and two animals, why wouldn't you eat the animals to keep the people alive? If you have made that decision ahead of time then you will be better able to carry it out when the need arises.

The thinking is that the world is headed for a major recession. If that is the case expect to lose over half of your 401k balance.

    Sounds good.

If the economy tanks, Trump is toast.

I am hoping for another -1,000 drop tomorrow.

Based on experience I'm going to try to get a lump sum distribution from my 401k Friday. I will take a hit on taxes but I might be able to recoup the loss later on by buying a single stock or two and flipping it when it increases.

Trump decided to hold off until his approval drops below 30. Then he's going to war with either Iran or Denmark.
